Wrinkle treatment with biostimulators in Düsseldorf

Biostimulators stimulate the skin to form more of its own collagen again. In this way they can soften wrinkles and counteract declining firmness. The effect builds up over weeks to months, usually in several outpatient sessions.

Wrinkle treatment with biostimulators in Düsseldorf: consultation and treatment in one place

Consultation room of the clinic
Consultation room

Your wrinkle treatment with biostimulators takes place at Klinik am Seestern in Düsseldorf, the specialist clinic for plastic and aesthetic surgery at Am Seestern 4, from the first consultation to the follow-up appointments. The treatment is outpatient: you come for your appointment and go home again afterwards. Because the effect usually builds up over several sessions, we normally see you several times, a few weeks apart.

The clinic is on the left bank of the Rhine in Lörick, in the Am Seestern office district near the B7. The U77 runs directly from the main station to the Am Seestern stop, from where it is a few minutes’ walk. There is free parking on site. So you can reach the clinic easily from all over Düsseldorf, from Meerbusch, Neuss and the surrounding area, also for every further session.

How do biostimulators work?

Over the years the skin forms less collagen while more of it is broken down, and the elastic fibres become thinner. The skin loses firmness, fat pads in the face shrink, and the contours of the cheeks, temples and jawline become softer. This is how wrinkles develop that come not from facial expressions but from declining firmness and lost volume.

This is where biostimulators, also called collagen stimulators, come in. They are injectable products whose fine particles trigger a targeted, mild reaction in the tissue. In response, the cells of the connective tissue form new collagen of the body’s own. The body breaks down the product itself over time; the newly formed collagen remains for a while.

That is the difference from the other wrinkle treatments: dermal fillers with hyaluronic acid fill immediately because the gel binds water. A muscle relaxant relaxes individual facial muscles and so softens expression lines. Biostimulators, by contrast, do not primarily fill, but stimulate the skin to build up more supporting tissue itself again. The change therefore shows gradually.

Biostimulators, hyaluronic acid or muscle relaxant?

Which treatment fits depends on whether wrinkles come from declining firmness of the skin, from loss of volume or from facial expressions.

01BiostimulatorsStimulate collagen

Biostimulators such as poly-L-lactic acid or calcium hydroxylapatite are applied over an area into the deep layers of the skin and stimulate the connective tissue to form new collagen. The effect builds up over weeks to months. They are an option above all for declining firmness of the skin and loss of volume.

02Hyaluronic acidDermal fillers

Hyaluronic acid is placed in the middle to deep layers of the skin. It binds water, replenishes volume loss and slightly lifts the skin at the treated site. In this way, deeper wrinkles can be softened and volume, for example in the cheeks or chin, can be compensated for.

03Muscle relaxantWrinkle treatment

A muscle relaxant inhibits the transmission of stimuli from the nerve to the muscle and in this way relaxes individual facial muscles in a targeted way. It is mainly an option for expression lines at the forehead and eyes; the natural facial expression is intended to be preserved.

Treatment durationabout 15 to 20 minutes
Typical areas

Which biostimulators are there?

In aesthetic medicine, three groups of active substances are mainly used. They differ in how they work, how quickly the body breaks them down and which zones they are suitable for.

  1. 01

    Poly-L-lactic acid

A synthetically produced substance made of building blocks of lactic acid, which the body gradually breaks down into water and carbon dioxide. The powder is mixed with sterile water before the treatment. The tissue absorbs the water within a few days; after that new collagen forms over weeks.

  2. 02

    Calcium hydroxylapatite

A mineral of the kind also found in bones and teeth, here as fine microspheres in a gel. Undiluted, the gel immediately evens out some volume; the microspheres serve the connective tissue as a scaffold for new collagen. Diluted, it is used over an area, for example on the neck.

  3. 03

    Polycaprolactone

A slowly degradable plastic, likewise as tiny microspheres in a gel. The gel fills at first and is broken down within a few weeks, while the microspheres stimulate collagen formation. Depending on the product, their breakdown takes different lengths of time.

Which active substance is an option for you depends on the zone, your skin and your goal. Your doctor decides this after the examination and discusses it with you. Unlike hyaluronic acid, biostimulators cannot be dissolved again with an enzyme. That is why the amount is planned cautiously and rather built up in several steps.

Who are biostimulators suitable for?

Biostimulators are an option above all when the skin loses firmness, contours become softer or the face looks hollow at the cheeks and temples. If you want a result that is visible immediately, you are often better advised to have fillers with hyaluronic acid. If the skin is already clearly sagging, a thread lift or a facelift may be the more suitable treatment.

Typical zones of a treatment with biostimulators

Depending on the active substance, mainly these areas are treated:

  • Temples
  • Cheeks and midface
  • Chin and jawline
  • Lines between nose and corners of the mouth
  • Neck and décolleté
  • Backs of the hands

Biostimulators are not intended for the lips and the skin directly around the eyes: there the risk of nodules is higher.

Your treatment at Klinik am Seestern step by step

This is how a wrinkle treatment with biostimulators proceeds at Klinik am Seestern, from the consultation to the effect:

  1. Step 1

    Beforehand

Consultation in Düsseldorf. We examine your skin, ask about previous illnesses, medication and earlier filler treatments, and agree with you the active substance, the zones and the expected number of sessions. In doing so we explain the possible risks to you. You can book your appointment online.

  2. Step 2

    30 to 60 minutes

The treatment. The skin is cleansed, disinfected and, if you wish, locally anaesthetised. With a fine needle or a blunt cannula the active substance is introduced in small amounts into the deep layers of the skin or the subcutaneous tissue and distributed evenly.

  3. Step 3

    Straight afterwards

Massage and cool. After poly-L-lactic acid the treated area is massaged immediately so that the product distributes evenly. Cooling can reduce swelling. Then you go home; make-up is possible again after a few hours.

  4. Step 4

    The first few days

Taking it easy. Redness, swelling or small bruises usually subside within a few days. After poly-L-lactic acid you massage the areas yourself during the first five days as instructed. Avoid saunas, sunbeds and strong sun until the swelling and redness have subsided.

  5. Step 5

    After a few weeks

Further sessions. Depending on the active substance and the starting situation, further sessions follow a few weeks apart, often two to three in total. Before each session we look at how your skin has reacted.

  6. Step 6

    After about 3 months

The effect. The new collagen builds up slowly. The change usually becomes clearly visible after about three months and can continue to develop after that.

How quickly and for how long do biostimulators work?

Directly after the treatment the area often looks somewhat fuller, mainly because of the swelling and, depending on the active substance, the water or gel with which it is introduced. This effect recedes over the first days to weeks; the wrinkle may then at first look as it did before. That is normal: the actual effect only begins when the connective tissue forms new collagen.

First changes usually show after a few weeks, more clearly after about three months. How long the effect lasts differs from person to person. It depends on the active substance, the treated zone, age and the skin, but also on sun and smoking. Studies and manufacturers’ information give periods of about one to two years, depending on the active substance. The effect is not permanent, because the skin continues to age. A top-up is possible. We will discuss with you when it makes sense.

What are the risks of biostimulators?

Like any treatment with injections, this one can also have side effects. The most important at a glance:

DIRECTLY AFTERWARDS
Redness, swelling, a feeling of pressure and bruises at the injection sites. They usually subside within hours to days, bruises sometimes only after two weeks.
WEEKS TO MONTHS LATER
Small nodules under the skin, usually only palpable. Many regress by themselves; some remain longer and have to be treated.
RARE
Inflammation, infections, excessive tissue reactions (granulomas), discolouration or a renewed outbreak of cold sores.
VERY RARE
If material enters a blood vessel, it can disturb the blood supply and damage tissue, in extreme cases also eyesight. Contact us immediately if you have unusual pain, skin turning pale or visual disturbances.

How often nodules and other reactions occur also depends on the technique: on the right dilution, the depth and an even distribution. We explain all the risks to you in detail before the treatment.

When are biostimulators not suitable?

In these cases a treatment with biostimulators is not an option, or only later:

  • during pregnancy and breastfeeding
  • with inflammation or herpes in the treatment area
  • with an allergy to ingredients or severe allergies
  • with a tendency to raised scars (keloids)
  • with autoimmune diseases, for example of the connective tissue
  • with blood clotting disorders
  • with poorly controlled diabetes
  • shortly after a laser treatment or deep peel in the same place

If you take blood-thinning medication, for example acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), the risk of bruising increases. Do not stop such medication on your own, but talk to us about it in the consultation.

Before and after your treatment with biostimulators

Before the appointment

Tell us about all medication, allergies and earlier filler treatments, if possible with the material used. Come without make-up, and do not schedule important occasions for the days directly after the treatment.

Massage after poly-L-lactic acid

So that the product distributes evenly, massage the treated areas five times a day for about five minutes with circular movements during the first five days. Your doctor will show you how.

Sun, heat and everyday life

On the first day, cooling helps against swelling. Never place ice directly on the skin. You can usually resume your everyday life straight away. Avoid saunas, sunbeds and strong sun until the swelling and redness have subsided.

Later treatments

Before a laser treatment or a peel in the same place, mention the biostimulators, because such procedures can trigger inflammation there. Calcium hydroxylapatite is visible on X-rays and CT scans, so mention it there too.

What does a wrinkle treatment with biostimulators cost in Düsseldorf? Costs and financing

The costs of a wrinkle treatment with biostimulators depend mainly on the active substance and the amount your skin needs, the number and size of the treated zones and the number of sessions. A later top-up may be added. You will find out the exact price after your consultation: you will then receive a treatment quote with no obligation. Financing is possible through our financing partner; more on this under Financing your treatment.

A wrinkle treatment with biostimulators is a self-pay service; German statutory health insurance does not usually cover it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between biostimulators and hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid binds water and fills a wrinkle or a contour directly after the treatment; the body breaks it down again after a few months. Biostimulators stimulate the connective tissue to form new collagen itself. Their effect therefore only shows gradually, usually over several sessions. Hyaluronic acid can be dissolved with an enzyme if necessary; biostimulators cannot.

How many sessions are needed for a treatment with biostimulators?

That depends on the active substance, the zones and your skin. Often two to three sessions a few weeks apart are needed; sometimes one is enough, sometimes more are needed. We will discuss how many you are likely to need in the consultation.

When can you see a result, and how long does it last?

The new collagen forms over weeks; the change usually becomes clearly visible after about three months. Studies and manufacturers’ information give an effect of about one to two years, depending on the active substance. How long it lasts in your case cannot be predicted. It is not permanent, because the skin continues to age.

Does the treatment with biostimulators hurt?

The injections and the introduction of the active substance can be unpleasant. An anaesthetic cream, a local anaesthetic and cooling make the treatment more bearable. A feeling of pressure or tension afterwards usually subsides within a day.

What side effects can a treatment with biostimulators have?

Redness, swelling and bruises at the injection sites are common and usually subside within a few days. Weeks to months later, small nodules may also form under the skin, which can usually only be felt. Inflammation or infections are rare; very rarely, material enters a blood vessel. We explain all the risks to you before the treatment.

Can biostimulators be combined with other treatments?

Yes, for example with dermal fillers with hyaluronic acid, which fill individual wrinkles in a targeted way, or with a muscle relaxant against expression lines on the forehead and around the eyes. What makes sense in your case and in which order, we will discuss in the consultation.

What does a wrinkle treatment with biostimulators cost in Düsseldorf?

The price depends on the active substance, the amount needed, the number of treated zones and the number of sessions. After your consultation at Klinik am Seestern you will receive a treatment quote with no obligation. Financing is possible through our financing partner.
