Cleft nose correction in Düsseldorf: consultation, surgery and aftercare in one place

Consultation room of the clinic

We plan and perform the correction of a cleft nose at the Deutsches Nasenzentrum® of Klinik am Seestern in Düsseldorf. The specialist clinic for plastic and aesthetic surgery has its own operating theatres and patient rooms, so that diagnostics, the procedure, the nights afterwards and aftercare are all in one building.

The clinic is on the left bank of the Rhine in Lörick, in the Am Seestern office area near the B7. The U77 runs directly from the main station to the Am Seestern stop, and you can park free of charge on site. This keeps the journey to the many check-up appointments from Düsseldorf, Meerbusch, Neuss and the surrounding area short.

Common reasons for surgical cleft nose correction

Impaired nasal breathing as a result of the malformation

Asymmetry of the nose and the midface

Wish for a less conspicuous appearance

What is a cleft nose?

A cleft nose is a congenital malformation caused by incomplete fusion of tissue during embryonic development. It typically affects the columella and can affect both the external appearance and the internal structures of the nose. The cleft nose often occurs in connection with a cleft lip, jaw and palate. In severe cases the malformation extends into the bony structures and affects shape and function.

What restrictions come with a cleft nose?

Nasal breathing can be considerably impaired because the nasal passages are often narrowed or deformed. This can lead to chronic breathing difficulties, increased susceptibility to respiratory infections and sleep disturbances. Speech can also be affected by altered resonance and airflow. Many of those affected have difficulty eating, especially in the first years of life, as swallowing and sucking are made harder. In addition to the physical impairments, the altered appearance can be a psychological burden.

Aims of a cleft nose correction

  • Improved nasal breathing by correcting narrowed or deformed nasal passages

  • Support of speech function, to the extent that it is impaired by the nasal structure, in coordination with further treatments

  • Reduced susceptibility to infection through improved nasal function

  • More symmetrical nose shape through reconstruction of the nasal tip and columella

What treatment option is there for a cleft nose?

The focus is on surgical correction, which, depending on severity, can take place in several stages.

  1. 01

    In childhood

As a rule, treatment of a cleft lip, jaw and palate already begins in childhood, often in the first months of life.

  2. 02

    In adolescence or adulthood

In adolescence or adulthood, further corrections to the shape and function of the nose may become necessary.

  3. 03

    Accompanying

Accompanying speech therapy or breathing therapy can be useful to support speech development and respiratory function.

  4. 04

    In some cases

In some cases, orthodontic treatment is also recommended to correct the position of the teeth and the bite.

How does treatment for a cleft nose correction proceed?

Treatment begins with comprehensive diagnostics. Several specialties are often involved, such as plastic surgery, ear, nose and throat medicine, orthodontics and speech therapy, in order to draw up an individual treatment plan. The surgical correction is usually performed under general anaesthesia and can take several hours. The procedure includes reconstruction of the nasal tip and columella and, where appropriate, surrounding structures. In aftercare, the course of healing and the function of the nose are checked. Swelling and bruising are normal in the first weeks, and it can take several months until the final result is visible.

This is how a cleft nose correction proceeds at Klinik am Seestern:

  1. Step 1

    Beforehand

Diagnostics in Düsseldorf. We examine the nose comprehensively and draw up your treatment plan, often together with other specialties. You can book the appointment online.

  2. Step 2

    Day of surgery

The procedure. The correction is usually performed under general anaesthesia and can take several hours; the nasal tip and columella and, where appropriate, surrounding structures are reconstructed.

  3. Step 3

    The first few days

In the clinic. You stay as an inpatient for two to three nights.

  4. Step 4

    Weeks 1 to 2

Plaster splint. You wear the plaster splint and avoid nicotine, sunbathing and sport; you wash your hair with your head bent forward.

  5. Step 5

    After 2 to 3 weeks

Back to everyday life. The stitches are removed after about 14 days; you are back out among people after two to three weeks.

  6. Step 6

    Up to week 6

No glasses. For the first six weeks you refrain from wearing glasses; in aftercare we check the healing and function of the nose.

  7. Step 7

    After several months

The result. Swelling and bruising are normal in the first weeks; it can take several months until the final result is visible.

What does the result of cleft nose surgery depend on?

The result cannot be guaranteed. It depends heavily on the individual case, among other things on the severity of the malformation, on age and on the number of procedures required. The aim is to improve nasal breathing and to correct the shape of the nose. In some cases further operations are necessary, in particular in children during the growth phase.

What restrictions and risks are there with cleft nose surgery?

As with any surgical procedure, cleft nose surgery involves risks and possible complications. These include infections, secondary bleeding, unwanted scarring and, in rare cases, impairment of nasal function. The aesthetic result may differ from expectations, which can be distressing. Swelling and bruising are normal and usually subside within weeks, but can temporarily affect nasal breathing. In some cases asymmetric healing occurs, which requires a further correction. Close cooperation with the treating doctor and careful aftercare help to reduce complications.

What does a cleft nose correction cost in Düsseldorf?

A cleft nose correction is planned individually; the costs depend on the severity and the extent of the reconstruction. After the diagnostics at Klinik am Seestern you will receive a no-obligation treatment offer. Financing is possible via our financing partner, more on this under Financing your treatment.

What should I look out for when choosing a surgeon?

Make sure that the surgeon has further training in plastic and reconstructive surgery, ideally with experience in facial surgery and in treating cleft lip, jaw and palate. In the consultation, ask about experience with the planned procedure. The surgeon should give you a realistic assessment of the possible changes and inform you comprehensively about the risks and the course of the operation. A relationship of trust that makes communication easier throughout the whole treatment is also important.

The Deutsches Nasenzentrum® at the Klinik am Seestern is headed by Dr. med. Michael Bromba. Arrange your appointment for a no-obligation, personal consultation.

Frequently asked questions

When does German statutory health insurance pay for a nose correction?

If the operation is necessary because of a functional disorder of the nose, private health insurance or Beihilfe (German civil service allowance) may cover part of the costs. This does not apply to the aesthetic part of the nose correction. Please discuss this with your private health insurance or Beihilfe. For people with statutory insurance, reimbursement by the German statutory health insurance fund may be possible if there is a medical indication. You will receive further information in your personal consultation.

How painful is nose surgery and how long is the nose swollen?

Any pain that occurs can be treated with accompanying medication. Swelling and bruising under the eyes are possible and usually subside largely by the time the cast is removed.

How long is the stay in the clinic for a nose correction?

That depends on the extent of the procedure. For a cleft nose correction, an inpatient stay of two to three nights is usually planned. We will discuss the exact duration with you in the consultation.

How should I behave straight after a nose correction, how long do I have to wear a cast and when can I return to sport?

In the first one to two weeks, wear the plaster splint applied straight after the correction, with an adhesive or acrylic dressing. Avoid nicotine, sunbathing and sport during this time. Wash your hair with your head bent forward. In the first six weeks after the nose correction you should also refrain from wearing glasses.

How long will I be signed off sick after nose surgery?

That depends on the type and extent of the procedure. In most cases you are unable to work for 14 days, in exceptional cases and after extensive procedures for longer. Your treating doctor will discuss with you what time off to expect in your case.
