Your gynaecomastia treatment takes place at Klinik am Seestern in Düsseldorf, from the first consultation to the follow-up appointments afterwards. The specialist clinic for plastic and aesthetic surgery has its own operating theatres and patient rooms: you are advised and operated on in the place where you also spend the nights after the procedure and to which you return for aftercare.

The clinic is on the left bank of the Rhine in Lörick, in the Am Seestern business district near the B7. The U77 runs directly from the main station to the Am Seestern stop, and there is free parking on the grounds. Enlarged breasts in men: gynaecomastia

The term gynaecomastia refers to enlarged breasts in men, which in many cases already develop during puberty. Despite diets and exercise, gynaecomastia can often only be remedied with difficulty without surgery.

A distinction is made between true gynaecomastia and pseudogynaecomastia. In pseudogynaecomastia, there is only an increase in fatty tissue; the enlarged breast is therefore caused by weight gain. In true gynaecomastia, the mammary gland is always enlarged, which also occurs in slim or athletic men. If there is also an increase in fatty tissue, this is called a mixed form. True gynaecomastia therefore has two forms:

  1. glandular form (mainly glandular tissue)
  2. mixed form (glandular body and fatty tissue)

In many cases, gynaecomastia develops during puberty

In most cases, gynaecomastia develops in the course of puberty (pubertal gynaecomastia). Physical discomfort or hypersensitivity of the breast are rare. The psychological burden of the enlarged breast can nevertheless be considerable in everyday life. In many cases, gynaecomastia can only be treated surgically.

In true gynaecomastia (glandular gynaecomastia), the male mammary gland is removed (mastectomy), while the areola and nipple are preserved. The removal of the glandular tissue can be combined with liposuction. The incision, and with it the later scar, is located in the area of the areola.

In pseudogynaecomastia, that is, enlargement of the breast caused purely by fat deposits, liposuction is usually an option. It is carried out using the tumescent technique. After the fat cells have been suctioned out, the stretched skin can contract. In the following weeks, the scar tissue under the skin usually regresses and the breast becomes softer again. In the case of considerable excess skin, however, for example after major weight loss with skin that has sagged clearly below the inframammary fold, a second procedure for tightening is required.

The forms compared

Which form, which treatment?

Before the procedure, our doctors determine whether the breast is enlarged mainly by fatty tissue or by glandular tissue. The treatment depends on this.

Aims of the treatment

  • A breast contour that matches the rest of the upper body
  • Tightening of the male breast

What is the procedure for treating gynaecomastia?

The surgical breast reduction for gynaecomastia takes about 1 to 1.5 hours and, depending on the extent, is carried out under local anaesthesia, twilight sedation or general anaesthesia. Before the procedure, our doctors determine whether fatty or glandular tissue is mainly responsible for the enlarged breast and whether, in the case of existing obesity, weight loss is necessary first.

In pure pseudogynaecomastia, a special solution (tumescent solution) is injected as part of liposuction, the tissue is loosened and the excess fatty tissue is then suctioned out with a fine cannula. During healing, the skin adapts to the flatter shape of the breast. In true gynaecomastia, excess glandular tissue is responsible for the enlarged breast. In addition to liposuction, this tissue is removed surgically in two steps.

This is how gynaecomastia treatment proceeds at Klinik am Seestern, from the consultation to the end of the rest period:

  1. Step 1

    Beforehand

Consultation in Düsseldorf. In the consultation, we clarify whether the breast is enlarged mainly by fatty or glandular tissue and whether weight loss is necessary beforehand. You can book your appointment online.

  2. Step 2

    Day of surgery

The procedure. It takes about 1 to 1.5 hours, under local anaesthesia, twilight sedation or general anaesthesia depending on the extent. You then usually stay two nights in the clinic.

  3. Step 3

    After a few days

Back to everyday life. You are back out among people. Swollen, reddened scars and bruising are possible during this time.

  4. Step 4

    Weeks 2 to 3

Compression garment. For two to three weeks you wear a compression garment.

  5. Step 5

    The weeks that follow

The breast softens. After liposuction, the scar tissue under the skin usually regresses and the breast becomes softer again.

  6. Step 6

    Up to 6 months

Sport and sun. For up to six months you avoid sport and direct sun exposure.
