Stomach reduction in Düsseldorf: what determines the costs

What a stomach reduction costs depends above all on three things: the procedure, that is, gastric balloon or endo-sleeve; the duration of the treatment; and the extent of the support through nutrition coaching, the app and follow-up appointments. We clarify which route suits you in a personal consultation at Klinik am Seestern in Düsseldorf. After that, you receive a no-obligation treatment quote that lists all services.

Consultation, treatment and aftercare take place in our specialist clinic in Lörick, on the left bank of the Rhine at Seestern near the B7, reachable directly from the main station by the U77 and with free parking spaces on the grounds.

What does a gastric balloon cost?

Four packages are available for treatment with the gastric balloon. They differ in the balloon, in the dwell time of about 4, 6 or 12 months, and in how closely nutrition coaches and the app support you during this time. The standard package starts at €3,500.

A gastric balloon is usually a self-pay service: German statutory health insurers mostly do not cover the costs, even when a balloon makes medical sense. Financing in instalments is possible.

What does an endo-sleeve cost, and when does German statutory health insurance pay?

For the endo-sleeve, you receive a no-obligation quote after the consultation, which includes pre- and aftercare. On a self-pay basis, you can have the procedure carried out at Klinik am Seestern.

With a medical indication in line with the guidelines, German statutory health insurance can cover the costs of a stomach reduction, for the endo-sleeve as well as for stomach surgery such as gastric sleeve or gastric bypass. If it covers the costs, the procedure usually takes place at the Nationalklinik of the Weight Doctors in Wertheim; you can continue to attend consultation, preparation and aftercare in Düsseldorf. You do not have to submit an application of your own for this: the Weight Doctors check your indication, organise the route up to the procedure and then bill your health insurer directly.

When German statutory health insurance can cover a stomach reduction

Whether the health insurer pays is decided by the insurer in each individual case. What counts is the body mass index (BMI) together with your health situation:

  • BMI from 40: With grade III obesity, a medical indication may exist.
  • BMI from 35 with accompanying conditions: With grade II obesity, it can be enough if recognised accompanying conditions are present, for example type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea, lipid metabolism disorders or joint disorders.
  • BMI from 50, or from 35 with type 2 diabetes where treatment options are exhausted: Here a procedure is possible even without a prior preparation programme.
  • Further requirements: you are at least 18 years old, you are not pregnant, and you are medically and psychologically stable for the procedure.

Without medical necessity, health insurers do not usually cover the costs.

Your route to a stomach reduction covered by German health insurance

This is how a stomach reduction covered by German health insurance works if you are advised in Düsseldorf:

  1. Step 1

    Beforehand

Consultation. In the no-obligation first consultation, we assess your starting position: BMI, accompanying conditions and previous attempts to lose weight.

  2. Step 2

    About 6 months

The multimodal concept. Nutritional advice, exercise and psychological support prepare you and document the evidence for the health insurer. The programme is a self-pay service and is not required if an immediate procedure is possible.

  3. Step 3

    Before the procedure

The check. All requirements are checked for you. You do not have to speak to your health insurer yourself for this.

  4. Step 4

    Day of the procedure

The procedure. The stomach reduction takes place on the scheduled date; billing is then done directly with your health insurer.

  5. Step 5

    Afterwards

The aftercare. You attend follow-up appointments and nutritional support in Düsseldorf again.

GLP-1 therapy and nutrition coaching: the costs

The monthly costs for GLP-1 therapy start at €330. This includes the first consultation, the medical briefing, the ongoing support and access to our app with smart scales and health tracker. After the examination, you receive an individual quote and a treatment plan. German statutory health insurance does not usually cover this therapy for weight loss.

Nutrition coaching with personal advice and app support is available from €159. It can be booked on its own or combined with a gastric balloon, the endo-sleeve or GLP-1 therapy.

Financing your treatment: paying in instalments

You can pay for all treatments for weight loss in monthly instalments through our financing partner. You can read how this works and which documents you need under Financing your treatment. We are also happy to discuss financing with you in the consultation in Düsseldorf.

Frequently asked questions

What does a stomach reduction cost in Düsseldorf?

That depends on the procedure. There are four packages for the gastric balloon; the standard package starts at €3,500. For the endo-sleeve, you receive a no-obligation quote after the consultation, which includes pre- and aftercare.

Does German statutory health insurance cover a stomach reduction?

With a medical indication in line with the guidelines, German statutory health insurance can cover the costs of a stomach reduction, for the endo-sleeve as well as for an operation. As a rule, this requires a BMI from 40 or a BMI from 35 with recognised accompanying conditions. The decision is always made case by case.

Does German statutory health insurance pay for the gastric balloon?

Usually not. The gastric balloon is a self-pay service; financing through our financing partner is possible.

Do I have to apply to my German statutory health insurance myself?

No. For a stomach reduction covered by German health insurance, the Weight Doctors check your medical indication, organise the preparation programme and bill your health insurer directly after the procedure.

What is the multimodal concept (MMK)?

The MMK is a preparation programme lasting about six months, with nutritional advice, exercise and psychological support. With a medical indication, it is usually a requirement for German statutory health insurance to cover the costs, and it documents the required evidence. The MMK itself is not a health insurance benefit.

Where does a procedure covered by German health insurance take place?

If German statutory health insurance covers the costs, the procedure usually takes place at the Nationalklinik of the Weight Doctors in Wertheim. You can continue to attend consultation, preparation and aftercare in Düsseldorf.

What does GLP-1 therapy cost?

The monthly costs start at €330. This includes the first consultation, the medical briefing, the ongoing support and access to our app with smart scales and health tracker. German statutory health insurance does not usually cover this therapy.

Can I pay for the treatment in instalments?

Yes. Through our financing partner, you can pay the costs in monthly instalments. You will find the details under Financing your treatment.
