Consultation room of the clinic
Consultation room

Your hair transplant takes place at Klinik am Seestern in Düsseldorf, from the first consultation to the follow-up appointment after 10 to 12 months. In the specialist clinic for plastic and aesthetic surgery, hair transplants are carried out under sterile operating conditions, and the procedure is outpatient.

The clinic is on the left bank of the Rhine in Lörick, in the Am Seestern office district near the B7. The U77 runs directly from the main station to the Am Seestern stop, and there is free parking on site. This also makes the check-up the day after the procedure easy to reach from all over Düsseldorf, from Meerbusch, Neuss and the surrounding area.

When is a hair transplant an option?

  • for hereditary hair loss
  • to cover scars
  • for missing eyelashes, beard hair or eyebrows

In hair transplantation, the two so-called FU techniques are mostly used today. FU stands for Follicular Unit and refers to the natural groups of hair follicles that are obtained from your own hair and prepared.

FUT and FUE hair transplant for hair loss

With both techniques, FUT and FUE, hair follicles are obtained from the donor area at the back of the head, which is little or not at all affected by hereditary hair loss. They are transplanted into the thinning or bald areas (recipient area).

Both methods obtain the hair follicles from the donor area at the back of the head. They differ in how the follicles are taken.

The hair follicles are taken individually from the donor area using fine hollow instruments and usually transplanted shortly afterwards; before they are inserted, each follicle is prepared once more by hand. FUE is used in particular for smaller areas, receding temples and shaping the hairline, as well as for beard, eyebrows and chest hair.

The donor hair is taken as a strip of skin about 1 to 1.5 cm wide at the back of the head, and trained hair transplant technicians divide it into individual grafts under stereo microscopes. Because only a narrow area has to be shaved, FUT is also an option for women and for longer hair. It is particularly suitable for large treatment areas.

How do the FU techniques differ from earlier methods?

Unlike earlier methods, FU techniques take the hair in its natural units, the so-called follicular units or hair follicles. Hairs do not grow individually from a hair root, but in small groups of 1 to 4 hairs. The aim is, on the one hand, an appearance that is as natural as possible. On the other hand, the hair follicles are to be transplanted as gently and undamaged as possible, so that as many of them as possible take root.

Aims of a hair transplant

  • Denser hair in thinning or bald areas
  • Transplanted hair from the donor area, which usually continues to grow permanently
  • A hair appearance that looks as natural as possible

Procedure and aftercare: your timetable at Klinik am Seestern

This is how a hair transplant proceeds at Klinik am Seestern, from the consultation to the result:

  1. Step 1

    Beforehand

Your consultation. In the consultation, our doctors assess your hair situation and estimate how your hair loss is likely to develop further. Before the procedure, you go through the treatment plan, including the marked hairline.

  2. Step 2

    Day of surgery

The procedure. The hair transplant is carried out as an outpatient under local anaesthesia. With the FUT method it takes 3 to 6 hours, with the FUE method 5 to 8 hours.

  3. Step 3

    Day 1 to 4

Check-up and head covering. If you wish, we will see you the day after the procedure for a check-up and a medical hair wash. Until day 4, you wear the head covering that we provide.

  4. Step 4

    Day 7 to 10

The scabs come off. By then the scalp has largely healed; slight redness can remain for up to 3 weeks.

  5. Step 5

    The first 2 weeks

Care as instructed. You wash and care for your hair with the shampoos and lotions provided and avoid direct, strong sun, sauna and solarium. In the first weeks, you refrain from swimming, football and strength training.

  6. Step 6

    Week 3 to 4

The hair falls out. After 2 to 3 weeks you are usually back out among people. Typically, about 90% of the transplanted hair falls out again at this point, which is a normal process.

  7. Step 7

    Month 2 to 6

Styling and new growth. After a resting phase of about 2 months, you can colour, wash, blow-dry and style your hair again. 3 to 6 months after the hair transplant, new growth begins from the remaining hair roots.

  8. Step 8

    Month 10 to 12

The result. The final result can now be assessed. For this point in time, we arrange a follow-up appointment with you.

How is the hair transplanted?

With very fine scalpels or needles, the surgeon makes small puncture channels (so-called “slits”) in the scalp, which determine the later direction of hair growth. The blade or needle width of 0.5 to 1.0 mm is matched to the width of the respective hair grafts. The depth of the punctures of 3 to 6 mm depends on the length of the hair roots. Because the puncture channel is as large as the hair graft, the wound and therefore also the later scar remain as small as possible. Trained hair transplant technicians then place the individual grafts into the slits with fine tweezers. During this process, the grafts must always stay moist; the hair root may only be touched at certain points and only a few times, in order to protect the growth zones.

What happens after the procedure?

If you wish, we will see you the day after your hair transplant at the clinic to check the treated areas and carry out a medical hair wash. You can also do the first hair wash yourself at home. For this, you will receive written instructions for the first days after the hair transplant.

Can swelling occur?

Swelling can occur after a hair transplant and subsides on its own after a few days. A headband is intended to prevent swelling from spreading to the eye area. With small to medium-sized hair transplants, swelling occurs less often.

How long does healing take?

Smaller scabs usually come off after 7 to 10 days, and the scalp has then largely healed. A slightly reddened scalp in the treated areas can remain for up to 3 weeks. Do not loosen the scabs by scratching. If they remain for longer than 10 days, we will give you advice on removing the scabbing.

How do I wash my hair after the procedure?

In the first 2 weeks, the hair is washed and cared for following our instructions and with the shampoos provided by us and lotions. Until day 4 after the own-hair transplant, you should wear the head covering that we provide; after that, you can wear a hat or a loose-fitting cap of your choice.

Can I go out in the sun after the procedure?

For 2 weeks, avoid direct, strong sun exposure, sauna and solarium.

Can I do sport?

In the first weeks after the hair transplant, refrain from swimming and from sports such as football or strength training.

Why does hair fall out after 3 to 4 weeks?

In the first 3 to 4 weeks, typically about 90% of the transplanted hair falls out again. This is a normal process. 3 to 6 months after the hair transplant, new growth begins from the remaining hair roots. The final result of the own-hair transplant can be assessed after 10 to 12 months. For this point in time, we arrange a follow-up appointment with you.

What does a hair transplant cost in Düsseldorf? Costs and financing

The cost of a hair transplant depends on the method and the extent of the procedure. The FUE technique usually requires a larger, healthy and dense donor area and takes more time. The costs for FUE procedures are therefore somewhat higher than for FUT procedures with the same number of grafts. We discuss how many grafts are possible for you in the consultation at Klinik am Seestern. Following this, we will prepare a no-obligation treatment quote for you. Financing is possible through our financing partner; more on this under Financing your treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Is there an age limit?

There is no fixed age limit. For patients under 23, however, it must be carefully examined whether a hair transplant makes sense at that point in time. In the consultation, we therefore assess not only your current hair situation but also estimate how your hair loss is likely to develop further. On this basis, we discuss which treatment comes into question for you.

Is a hair transplant an option for everyone with hair loss?

Hair transplant is a procedure for treating thinning or bald areas in hereditary hair loss. In individual cases, it cannot be recommended. It can also be used to cover scars, to reconstruct beard, eyebrows and eyelashes, and for chest hair.

When is a hair transplant not possible?

In hair loss caused by illness or stress, even a hair transplant reaches its limits.

Can my hair continue to fall out despite a hair transplant?

The transplanted hair comes from the donor area at the back of the head, which is usually little affected by hereditary hair loss. It therefore usually continues to grow in its new place as well. The remaining hair can, however, continue to be affected by hair loss. In the consultation, our doctors therefore estimate how your hair loss is likely to develop further. The more stable your current hair situation is, the better the result of a hair transplant can be planned.

Can the hair be cared for and styled as before after the hair transplant?

Yes. After a resting phase of about 2 months, you can colour, wash, blow-dry and style your hair as before. Styling the tips of the hair with wax or hair gel is possible again just a few days after the hair transplant, provided the scalp is not touched.

What does a hair transplant cost in Düsseldorf?

The costs depend on the method and the extent of the procedure. With the same number of grafts, FUE is somewhat more expensive than FUT because it takes more time. After your consultation at Klinik am Seestern, you will receive a no-obligation treatment quote. Financing is possible through our financing partner.
