The straightening of your nasal axis takes place at the Deutsches Nasenzentrum® of Klinik am Seestern in Düsseldorf. The specialist clinic for plastic and aesthetic surgery has its own operating theatres and patient rooms: you often stay overnight for observation after the procedure, and the follow-up appointments afterwards take place in the same building.

The clinic is on the left bank of the Rhine in Lörick, in the Am Seestern office district near the B7. The U77 runs directly from the main station to the Am Seestern stop, and you can park free of charge on site. Common reasons for straightening the nasal axis

Wish for a straighter, more symmetrical nasal profile

Complaints such as obstructed nasal breathing, headaches or recurrent sinus infections that may be connected with the crooked nasal axis

Wish for a nose that suits the proportions of the face better

What is meant by straightening the nasal axis?

Straightening the nasal axis refers to a surgical procedure used to correct a crooked or asymmetrical nose. The aim is to improve both the appearance and the function of the nose. A crooked nasal axis can be congenital or arise from injuries or growth disorders. It can make the face look asymmetrical and lead to functional problems such as breathing difficulties or sinus infections. During the straightening, the nose is brought into a straighter, more symmetrical position to improve nasal breathing.

Aims of straightening the nasal axis

  • Improvement of nasal breathing by correcting curvatures of the nasal septum that obstruct the airflow

  • Relief of complaints such as headaches or sinus problems, insofar as they are connected with the crooked nasal axis

  • Stabilisation of the nasal structure through the alignment of bone and cartilage

  • A straighter nasal axis as a contribution to a more symmetrical appearance

01Septorhinoplasty

This technique combines the straightening of the nasal septum (septoplasty) with changes to the external nasal structure (rhinoplasty). The aim is to improve both breathing and the shape of the nose.

If a curvature of the nasal septum is the main cause of the crooked nasal axis, the nasal septum is straightened to improve nasal breathing.

03Correction of nasal bone and cartilage

In some cases, the nasal bone and cartilage have to be realigned or reshaped. This is done through targeted incisions and reshaping.

What is the procedure for treatment to straighten the nasal axis?

Treatment begins with a detailed consultation and planning. The surgeon examines the nasal structure, analyses the facial features and determines the suitable method for the correction. Your wishes and expectations are also discussed at this stage.

The procedure is usually performed under general anaesthesia. The duration depends on the extent of the correction. Depending on the starting situation, the surgeon operates with an open or closed technique. The nasal septum, bone and cartilage are realigned to straighten the nasal axis. In some cases, cartilage is additionally transplanted to stabilise the structure.

After the operation, the nose is stabilised with a splint or a dressing to support healing and protect the new shape. Patients often stay in the clinic overnight for observation. Aftercare includes regular follow-up appointments to monitor the course of healing.

This is how the straightening of your nasal axis proceeds at Klinik am Seestern:

  1. Step 1

    Beforehand

Consultation in Düsseldorf. We examine the nasal structure, analyse the facial features, discuss your wishes and determine the suitable method. You can book the appointment online.

  2. Step 2

    Day of surgery

The procedure. The operation is usually performed under general anaesthesia, open or closed; the nasal septum, bone and cartilage are realigned. A splint or a dressing then protects the new shape.

  3. Step 3

    First night

In the clinic. You often stay overnight for observation; an outpatient procedure is also possible.

  4. Step 4

    Weeks 1 to 2

Plaster splint. You wear the plaster splint and avoid nicotine, sunbathing and sport; you wash your hair with your head bent forward.

  5. Step 5

    After about 14 days

Back to everyday life. The stitches are removed, and you are back out among people after one to two weeks. In most cases you are unfit for work for about 14 days.

What does the result of straightening the nasal axis depend on?

The result depends on the starting situation, the technique chosen, individual healing and aftercare. The aim is to improve nasal breathing and to make the nasal axis straighter. Whether and to what extent this succeeds cannot be guaranteed in advance. The final result only shows after a few months, when the swelling has subsided completely and the nasal structures have stabilised.

What restrictions come with straightening the nasal axis?

Temporary restrictions can occur after straightening the nasal axis. Swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes are normal and usually subside within the first two weeks. In the first few days, swelling may impair nasal breathing, and there may be pain or a feeling of pressure. The nose is sensitive in the first weeks and must be protected from knocks and pressure. You should avoid physical exertion in the first weeks. Complete healing can take several months.

What side effects and risks are there with straightening the nasal axis?

As with any surgical procedure, straightening the nasal axis involves risks and side effects. The most common risks include infections, bleeding and scarring. In rare cases, unwanted aesthetic results occur that require a follow-up correction. Healing disorders such as remaining asymmetry or breathing difficulties are also possible. Temporary swelling, bruising and restricted nasal breathing are normal and usually subside within a few weeks. In rare cases, permanent changes in skin sensitivity or problems with nasal function can occur. Careful aftercare and following the instructions after the operation help to reduce these risks.

What does straightening the nasal axis cost in Düsseldorf?

The costs depend on the extent of the correction and on whether the function of the nose is improved as well as its shape. You can pay conveniently in instalments through our financing partner medipay. More on this on the Rhinoplasty page. After your consultation you will receive a no-obligation treatment offer. More about financing under Financing your treatment.

What should I look out for when choosing a doctor?

Make sure the surgeon has experience in nasal surgery and especially in correcting crooked noses, and find out about the specialist qualification, for example in plastic and aesthetic surgery or in ear, nose and throat medicine. In the consultation, ask about experience with the planned procedure. Open communication is important so that your wishes and expectations are discussed. The surgeon should explain the course of the operation, the possible risks and the aftercare to you in an understandable way.

The Deutsches Nasenzentrum® at the Klinik am Seestern is headed by Dr. med. Michael Bromba. Arrange your appointment for a no-obligation, personal consultation.

Frequently asked questions

When does German statutory health insurance pay for a nose correction?

If the operation is necessary because of a functional disorder of the nose, private health insurance or Beihilfe (German civil service allowance) may cover part of the costs. This does not apply to the aesthetic part of the nose correction. Please discuss this with your private health insurance or Beihilfe. For people with statutory insurance, reimbursement by the German statutory health insurance fund may be possible if there is a medical indication. You will receive further information in your personal consultation.

How painful is nose surgery and how long is the nose swollen?

Any pain that occurs can be treated with accompanying medication. Swelling and bruising under the eyes are possible and usually subside largely by the time the cast is removed.

How long is the stay in the clinic for a nose correction?

That depends on the extent of the procedure. Smaller measures can be carried out as an outpatient. As a rule, you can leave the clinic one day after the correction; in individual cases you stay for a second night for observation.

How should I behave straight after a nose correction, how long do I have to wear a cast and when can I return to sport?

In the first one to two weeks, wear the plaster splint applied straight after the correction, with an adhesive or acrylic dressing. Avoid nicotine, sunbathing and sport during this time. Wash your hair with your head bent forward. In the first six weeks after the nose correction you should also refrain from wearing glasses.

How long will I be signed off sick after nose surgery?

That depends on the type of procedure, for example on whether only the nose tip is corrected, the nose is straightened or a comprehensive nose correction is carried out. In most cases you are unable to work for 14 days, in exceptional cases somewhat longer. Your treating doctor will discuss with you what time off work to expect in your case.
