How does a tummy tuck work?
Mini abdominoplasty
Depending on the initial findings and the aim, a tummy tuck can be carried out to different extents. Excess skin and fatty tissue are removed and, if necessary, the abdominal wall is additionally tightened. If a small tightening is enough, the lower abdomen is tightened up to the navel. The effect extends to the groins and the pubic area. In this case the scar lies above the pubic hair.
Large tummy tuck with liposuction
A large tummy tuck covers the entire area from the lower abdomen to the costal margin. In addition to the removal of skin and fatty tissue, the navel is repositioned. If your doctor recommends it and you wish, the tummy tuck can be supplemented with liposuction of the hips and waist and with tightening of the muscles. Stretch marks or caesarean scars in the removed area of skin can be removed along with it.

Your schedule at the Klinik am Seestern
This is how a tummy tuck proceeds at Klinik am Seestern, from the consultation to full physical capacity:
Step 1
Beforehand

How long will I be in pain and how long will my body stay swollen after a tummy tuck?
Temporary post-operative bleeding, swelling, bruising and pain are possible. Pain can usually be treated well with medication. With a good course of healing, the symptoms usually subside within about 2 weeks.
How does the scar run with a tummy tuck?
The course and length of the scar depend on the extent of the procedure. With a mini abdominoplasty the scar lies directly above the pubic hair and is roughly as wide as it. With a large tummy tuck the scar extends to the pelvic bones. The incision is planned so that the scar lies, as far as possible, in the area of underwear or swimwear.
Can the muscles also be tightened as part of a tummy tuck?
Yes, the muscles in the lower and upper abdomen can additionally be tightened in most cases. This is an option especially with slack abdominal muscles, for example after a pregnancy.
What do I need to bear in mind after a tummy tuck? When can I do sport again?
For the first four to six weeks, wear a compression garment fitted before the procedure and avoid sport and heavy physical work during this time. The stitches are removed about two weeks after the procedure. After about three months, unrestricted movement is usually possible again.
When does German statutory health insurance pay for a tummy tuck?
German statutory health insurers usually regard a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) as an aesthetic procedure and mostly do not cover the costs. Exceptions are possible in individual cases, for example with recurring inflammation beneath an apron of skin. Whether cover of the costs is an option is decided by your health insurer; please clarify this with them before the procedure.
When can I go back to work after a tummy tuck?
That depends on your occupation. For work that is not very physically demanding, a return wearing the compression garment is often possible after two to three weeks. The more strenuous your work, the longer the break should be. You should only resume physical exertion, including carrying heavy objects, after 3 to 4 weeks, and sport only after 6 to 8 weeks. I had my appointment at the practice for a consultation about my lipoedema, and I really want to leave a review even though I haven't had any surgery there yet. The reason is that this was the first time I felt truly taken seriously during an examination of my lipoedema. Dr. Witt was very friendly and professional from the start, and at the same time incredibly pleasant and humane. He took an exceptional amount of time, examined me very thoroughly and answered all my questions in detail. It is precisely such little things that make a huge difference to me personally and reinforced my positive overall impression of the practice. The practice itself is also absolutely impressive. It is extremely modern, high-quality and stylishly furnished. You feel more as if you are entering a luxury hotel than a traditional doctor's practice. Everything seems very well thought out, calm and professional. The organisation around the appointment was also excellent. Even before the appointment, communication was always very friendly, quick and professional. Questions were answered immediately and the whole process seemed perfectly organised. I was also allowed to park in the clinic's car park, which was an enormous relief since everything in the area was completely full. Although it was already later in the afternoon, Dr. Witt even personally saw to it that enquiries were made internally about my question regarding costs. Shortly after I had left the practice, I already received all the information by email. That too simply shows how professionally and attentively they work there.
