Endo-sleeve in Düsseldorf: consultation, procedure and aftercare at Klinik am Seestern

Consultation room of the clinic
Consultation room

We offer the Endo-sleeve with POSE® 3.0 at Klinik am Seestern in Düsseldorf together with the Weight Doctors. Consultation, procedure and aftercare all take place in the same building: the specialist clinic has its own treatment rooms and patient rooms, so after the gastroscopy you can also spend the first night here if needed. From the first consultation, you are also accompanied by a dedicated contact person from the Weight Doctors, and for the time after the procedure their nutritional advisers are at your side.

The clinic is on the left bank of the Rhine in Lörick, in the Am Seestern office district near the B7. The U77 runs without a change from the main station to the Am Seestern stop; by car you come via the A52 and the A57, or from the airport via the A44, and you can park on site free of charge. This also makes it easy to reach your follow-up appointments after the procedure from Düsseldorf, Meerbusch, Neuss and the surrounding area.

What is the Endo-sleeve with POSE® 3.0?

Being overweight can restrict quality of life and affects not only well-being but also health. Stomach reduction using the POSE® 3.0 Endo-sleeve procedure (short for “Primary Obesity Surgery Endoluminal”) is an endoscopic way of supporting weight loss medically. The stomach is gathered and sutured from the inside during a gastroscopy. Because it then has a narrow, tube-like shape, the Endo-sleeve is also called a “gastric sleeve without surgery”.

POSE® 3.0 is the further development of the POSE® procedure from the US manufacturer USGI Medical. While the first generation mainly gathered the stomach at its entrance and exit, POSE® 3.0 shapes it along its entire length.

What is new with the POSE® 3.0 Endo-sleeve?

In the POSE® 3.0 procedure, 6 to 8 anchors are placed along the inner wall of the stomach, instead of the previous 14 to 16. With the double-fold strategy and the double-helix technique, each anchor grips two fold layers.

  • 6 to 8 anchors instead of 14 to 16
  • Double-fold strategy: each anchor grips two fold layers
  • Double-helix technique holds the double fold layers
  • Volume reduction: the aim is for approx. 25% of the stomach volume to remain

The treatment is minimally invasive and is carried out as an outpatient procedure or with one overnight stay.

How is the stomach reduced with the Endo-sleeve?

The stomach is reduced endoscopically through the oesophagus directly in the stomach, by placing so-called anchors using special sutures. Depending on size, starting weight and stomach volume, the doctor performing the treatment places about 6 to 8 small anchors, which form folds in the stomach and thus reduce its volume. The POSE® 3.0 Endo-sleeve procedure works at several points:

  1. Reducing the stomach volume in the upper part of the stomach, so that you take in less food and feel full sooner;
  2. Narrowing the stomach outlet, so that the feeling of fullness lasts longer and hunger sets in later;
  3. Shaping the middle part of the stomach into a narrower, tube-like structure.

The aim is to reduce the stomach by up to 75%; what remains is an elongated, narrow stomach shape. Nothing is removed in the process; the stomach wall is only folded and sutured. The basic function of the stomach is retained. Long-term use of accompanying medication or dietary supplements is generally not required.

The procedure in detail

The doctor performing the treatment introduces fine instruments through the mouth into the stomach and, during a gastroscopy, first places folds in the area of the stomach wall that stretches particularly strongly when food is taken in. Published studies show that folds in this part of the stomach can help you feel full after smaller amounts.

In the POSE® 3.0 procedure, 6 to 8 anchors are placed in a double-fold strategy. Each anchor grips two layers of the stomach wall (“Double Helix”).

The process is then repeated at the lower end of the stomach. This slows stomach emptying, and the feeling of fullness after a meal lasts longer.

Endo-sleeve, gastric balloon or surgery?

The POSE® 3.0 Endo-sleeve procedure is a minimally invasive procedure in obesity therapy. Studies report an average reduction in excess weight of 50 to 60 percent within two years; how much weight you lose yourself depends on your starting situation and on changes to your diet. Klinik am Seestern supports you with an individually tailored change in diet.

The procedure combines the permanent nature of a surgical stomach reduction with the approach of a gastroscopy. It is carried out without an incision through the abdominal wall, and recovery is generally shorter compared with surgical procedures. Most patients return to their daily routine after a long weekend. A gastric balloon, by contrast, reduces the stomach only temporarily.

Features of the Endo-sleeve

  • The permanently reduced stomach volume can help to control the feeling of hunger better
  • The treatment is carried out without an incision through the abdominal wall
  • The recovery time is generally short
  • No external wounds, so the wound risks of surgical procedures do not apply

Three ways to reduce the stomach

Which way suits you depends on your weight, your health and your goals. The key differences at a glance.

01Endo-sleevepermanent, without an incision

During a gastroscopy, the stomach is gathered from the inside and sutured with anchors. Nothing is removed; the stomach retains about a quarter of its volume. The procedure is intended to be permanent.

Who is the Endo-sleeve an option for?

The Endo-sleeve is generally an option for patients with a BMI of 30 to 40 kg/m² who are looking for an endoscopic alternative to gastric sleeve surgery. What matters is that you are ready to change your diet and lifestyle permanently: how much weight you lose and keep depends essentially on how consistently you follow the recommendations of nutritional advice and exercise therapy.

Before the procedure there is a detailed medical briefing and an examination by a specialist. We also clarify whether there are health reasons against the procedure. The material of the anchors contains nickel, so POSE® 3.0 is not an option if you have a nickel allergy.

Your schedule at the Klinik am Seestern

This is how an Endo-sleeve proceeds at Klinik am Seestern in Düsseldorf, from the consultation to aftercare:

  1. Step 1

    Beforehand

Consultation in Düsseldorf. In the consultation we examine you, discuss your goals and clarify whether the Endo-sleeve is an option for you. You can book your appointment online.

  2. Step 2

    Day of the procedure

The gastroscopy. The procedure takes about 45 minutes and is carried out under general anaesthesia. Afterwards you go home or stay in the clinic for one night for observation.

  3. Step 3

    After 3 to 4 days

Back to everyday life. Most patients resume their daily routine after a long weekend.

  4. Step 4

    The first 3 weeks

Liquid diet. A special liquid diet protects the stomach while the sutures grow in.

  5. Step 5

    Afterwards

Back to normal eating, step by step. With accompanying nutritional advice, you build your diet back up until you eat without restrictions, only in smaller portions.

  6. Step 6

    In the long term

Maintaining your weight. The reduced stomach remains. Whether your weight stays down depends mainly on diet and exercise; we see you again at the clinic for aftercare.

How safe is the Endo-sleeve?

The POSE® and POSE® 3.0 Endo-sleeve procedures have been carried out more than 13,000 times worldwide and continue to be studied in medical studies. Because no incisions are made through the abdominal wall, some risks of conventional obesity surgery do not apply. Like any procedure, however, endoscopic stomach reduction can also have side effects and complications: slight bleeding at the sutures in the stomach, bruising and injuries to the stomach or oesophagus are possible. They can generally be treated without further surgery. We explain this to you in detail before the treatment.

Because the stomach volume is reduced permanently, the procedure is also meant to help maintain weight after weight loss. Whether a renewed weight gain (yo-yo effect) is avoided, however, depends essentially on your diet and lifestyle.

What does an Endo-sleeve cost in Düsseldorf? Costs and financing

The cost of an Endo-sleeve depends on your starting situation and the extent of pre- and aftercare. After your consultation at Klinik am Seestern, you will receive a no-obligation treatment quote. Financing is possible through our financing partner, more on this under Financing your treatment.

Where there is a medical indication in line with the guidelines, your German statutory health insurance may cover the costs. We check with you before the procedure whether the requirements are met; if it covers the costs, the procedure generally takes place at the Weight Doctors’ Nationalklinik in Wertheim, while consultation and aftercare remain in Düsseldorf. Without cost cover, the Endo-sleeve is a self-pay service. You can read all the requirements under Costs and German health insurance.

Frequently asked questions

What is an Endo-sleeve?

An Endo-sleeve is an endoscopic stomach reduction. During a gastroscopy, the stomach is gathered and sutured from the inside with anchors and sutures, becoming narrower and shorter. Nothing is removed in the process and the abdominal wall is not opened. At Klinik am Seestern, we work with the POSE® 3.0 technique.

What are the features of the POSE® 3.0 Endo-sleeve procedure?

Stomach reduction with the POSE® 3.0 Endo-sleeve is designed to be permanent and is intended to support you over a longer period with weight loss and changing your lifestyle habits. A gastric balloon, by contrast, can be worn for 12 months at most. Surgical procedures for stomach reduction involve incisions in the abdominal wall and the risks associated with them. We discuss which procedure is an option for you in the consultation.

Who is an option for treatment with the POSE® 3.0 Endo-sleeve?

The procedure is generally an option for patients with a BMI of 30 to 40 kg/m² who are looking for an endoscopic alternative to gastric sleeve surgery and are ready to change their diet and lifestyle permanently.

How long does the procedure take?

About 45 minutes. It takes place under general anaesthesia as part of a gastroscopy. Afterwards you can go home or stay in the clinic for one night for observation.

Will the Endo-sleeve leave scars?

No. The stomach is sutured exclusively from the inside; the abdominal wall remains untouched.

How much weight can I lose with the POSE® 3.0 Endo-sleeve?

That cannot be predicted. Weight loss depends on your individual starting situation and on how consistently you follow the medical recommendations and change your lifestyle in the long term. Because the procedure is designed to be permanent, you have more time to change your habits than with a time-limited treatment.

When am I fit to carry on as normal after a POSE® 3.0 Endo-sleeve?

Most patients can resume their daily routine after 3 to 4 days, that is, after roughly a long weekend. After surgical procedures for stomach reduction, recovery generally takes considerably longer.

What may I eat after the Endo-sleeve?

For the first 3 weeks we recommend a special liquid diet so that the sutures in the stomach can grow in. After that, with accompanying nutritional advice, you build your diet back up step by step until you eat without restrictions, only in smaller portions.

What risks does the Endo-sleeve have?

The Endo-sleeve is also a medical procedure. Slight bleeding at the sutures in the stomach, bruising and injuries to the stomach or oesophagus are possible. Such complications can generally be treated without further surgery. We explain all risks to you in detail before the procedure.

Is the Endo-sleeve possible with a nickel allergy?

Not with POSE® 3.0, because the material of the anchors contains nickel. Please mention an allergy in the consultation so that we can find a different way together.

Does German statutory health insurance cover the costs?

Where there is a medical indication in line with the guidelines, your German statutory health insurance may cover the costs. We check with you before the procedure whether the requirements are met. If it covers the costs, the procedure generally takes place at the Weight Doctors’ Nationalklinik in Wertheim; consultation and aftercare remain in Düsseldorf. Without cost cover, the Endo-sleeve is a self-pay service.

What does an Endo-sleeve cost in Düsseldorf?

The costs depend on your starting situation and the extent of pre- and aftercare. After your consultation at Klinik am Seestern, you will receive a no-obligation treatment quote. Financing is possible through our financing partner.
