Reasons for nose narrowing

  • Wide nasal base or pronounced nasal wings
  • Asymmetries and irregularities of the nose
  • Wish for a nose that better matches personal ideas

What is meant by nose narrowing?

Nose narrowing is a surgical procedure that reduces the width of the nose and adapts the nasal base to the proportions of the face. Patients often wish for nose narrowing when their nose looks wide in relation to the other facial features or the nasal wings are pronounced. The aim of the operation is a narrower, more even nose that suits the individual facial features better.

Possible functional aims of nose narrowing

  • Improved nasal breathing where the airways are narrowed

  • Stability of the nasal structure through careful adjustment and realignment

  • Relief of symptoms such as a feeling of pressure or a blocked nose, where they are due to structural irregularities

What treatment options for nose narrowing are there?

There are various surgical techniques for nose narrowing. Which one comes into question depends on the structure of the nose and the patient’s goals. The most common methods include:

These techniques can be used individually or in combination. In the planning phase, the surgeon discusses your wishes and examines the anatomical conditions in order to determine the suitable approach.

01Reducing the nasal base

With a wide nasal base, the nasal wings can be made smaller by removing tissue or repositioning them. The nose then looks narrower.

02Correcting the bridge of the nose

If the bridge of the nose appears too wide, the surgeon can remove bone or cartilage and make the bridge narrower.

A wide nasal tip also shapes the appearance of the nose. By adjusting the cartilage structure in a targeted way, the nasal tip can be refined and made smaller.

How does treatment for nose narrowing work?

It begins with a detailed consultation and planning. The surgeon discusses the desired changes with the patient and examines the nasal structure. This includes an analysis of the facial features so that the changes suit the overall picture. The operation plan is based on this.

The operation is usually performed under general anaesthesia. Depending on its extent, it typically takes one to three hours. The incisions are made either at the base of the nose or inside the nose.

During the operation the surgeon removes tissue or cartilage and reshapes the nose. The nose is then stabilised with a splint to support healing and secure the new shape. After the procedure, the course of healing is checked regularly.

Swelling and bruising are normal at first. Follow the medical instructions on caring for the nose exactly. Most patients can take up light activities again after about a week, but should avoid intensive physical strain and direct sunlight for several weeks.

This is how your nose narrowing proceeds at Klinik am Seestern:

  1. Step 1

    Beforehand

Consultation in Düsseldorf. We discuss the changes you would like, examine the structure of your nose and analyse your facial features; the surgical plan is drawn up on this basis. You can book the appointment online.

  2. Step 2

    Day of surgery

The procedure. The operation is usually performed under general anaesthesia and typically takes one to three hours. The incisions are made at the base of the nose or inside the nose; a splint then stabilises the nose.

  3. Step 3

    The first few days

In the clinic. You stay one to two nights. Swelling and bruising are normal in the first period.

  4. Step 4

    Weeks 1 to 2

Plaster splint. You wear the plaster splint and do without nicotine, sunbathing and sport. After about a week, light activities are usually possible again.

  5. Step 5

    After about 14 days

Back to everyday life. The stitches are removed, and you are back out among people after one to two weeks. In most cases you are unfit for work for about 14 days.

  6. Step 6

    Up to week 6

No glasses. For the first six weeks you do not wear glasses and avoid intense physical exertion and direct sun.

What does the result of nose narrowing depend on?

The result depends on the starting situation, the nature of the skin and cartilage, the planning, the surgical technique and the course of healing. The aim is a nasal width that better suits the proportions of the face. Realistic expectations are important: the healing process takes time, and the final result is only visible after a few months.

What restrictions come with nose narrowing?

After nose narrowing, temporary restrictions occur that are part of the healing process. Directly after the operation, swelling, bruising and a blocked nose are common, which make breathing harder. These symptoms usually subside within the first two weeks. During this time the nose may react sensitively to touch. Avoid activities that put strain on or endanger the nose, for example intense physical exertion or wearing glasses that press on the bridge of the nose. It can take a few months until the final result is visible.

What side effects and risks are there with nose narrowing?

As with any operation, nose narrowing involves risks and side effects. These include general risks such as infections, bleeding or reactions to the anaesthesia. Specific risks of nose narrowing are unwanted scarring, asymmetries or an unsatisfactory aesthetic result, which in rare cases may require a follow-up correction.

Temporary swelling, bruising and restricted nasal breathing are normal in the first weeks after the operation and usually subside within a few weeks. In the long term, in rare cases instability of the nasal structure or scarring may occur, impairing breathing.

Follow the aftercare instructions carefully and attend the check-up appointments so that the course of healing is monitored and complications are detected early.

What does nose narrowing cost in Düsseldorf?

The costs depend on which techniques are combined and how extensive the procedure is. You can conveniently pay in instalments via our financing partner medipay. More on this on the Rhinoplasty page. After your consultation you will receive a no-obligation treatment offer. More on financing under Financing your treatment.

What should I look out for when choosing a doctor for nose narrowing?

Make sure that the surgeon has experience in nasal surgery. Find out about the doctor’s qualifications, for example the specialist title and memberships of specialist societies. In the consultation, ask about experience with the planned procedure.

Trust between patient and doctor is also important. There should be sufficient time for the consultation so that your wishes and expectations can be discussed. The course of the operation, the risks and the necessary aftercare should be explained to you clearly.

The Deutsches Nasenzentrum® at Klinik am Seestern is headed by Dr. med. Michael Bromba. Feel free to arrange an appointment for a no-obligation consultation in Düsseldorf.

Frequently asked questions

When does German statutory health insurance pay for a nose correction?

If the operation is necessary because of a functional disorder of the nose, private health insurance or Beihilfe (German civil service allowance) may cover part of the costs. This does not apply to the aesthetic part of the nose correction. Please clarify this beforehand with your private health insurance or Beihilfe. For people with statutory insurance, reimbursement by the German statutory health insurance fund is possible if there is a medical indication. You will receive further information in the personal consultation.

How painful is nose surgery and how long is the nose swollen?

Pain after the operation can usually be treated well with medication. Swelling and bruising under the eyes are possible; they have usually subsided by the time the cast is removed.

How long is the stay in the clinic for a nose correction?

As a rule, you can leave the clinic one day after the correction. In a few exceptional cases you stay for a second night for observation. Smaller procedures can be done on an outpatient basis.

How should I behave straight after a nose correction, how long do I have to wear a cast and when can I return to sport?

In the first one to two weeks you wear a plaster splint applied straight after the correction, with an adhesive or acrylic dressing. Avoid nicotine, sunbathing and sport during this time. Wash your hair with your head bent forward. In the first six weeks after the nose correction you should also not wear glasses.

How long will I be signed off sick after nose surgery?

That depends on which type of nose correction is necessary in your case. It makes a difference whether only the tip of the nose is corrected, the nose is straightened or a comprehensive nose correction is carried out. In most cases you are unfit for work for about 14 days, in exceptional cases somewhat longer. In the consultation you will find out how much time off work you should expect in your case.
