When can a stomach reduction make sense?

Finding a balanced relationship between diet and exercise is hard for many people. Often there is an imbalance, with a surplus of food and a lack of exercise; the result is rising weight. Overweight and obesity are not rare: the number of people affected is rising across Germany, and many find no way to lose weight without support.

Stomach reduction without surgery: endoscopic procedures

Klinik am Seestern offers various ways of supporting weight loss medically, without a radical diet and without abdominal surgery. The endoscopic procedures for stomach reduction reduce the amount you can eat per meal. An individual nutrition plan and a personal exercise programme complement the treatment and are meant to help you maintain the weight you have reached in the long term.

Differences from surgical procedures

Unlike surgical obesity treatments, which require one large incision or several small ones in the abdominal wall, the endoscopic approach leaves no external wound. The risk of wound infections therefore no longer applies, pain after the procedure is usually lower and recovery shorter. After the first few weeks, a normal diet without dietary restrictions is usually possible again. The treatment is an option for people with a BMI of approx. 28 to 42. How much weight you lose depends on your starting weight, your diet and your exercise.

Features of endoscopic stomach reduction

  • The smaller stomach volume can help to control the feeling of hunger better
  • The treatment is carried out without an incision through the abdominal wall
  • Back out among people, usually after a few days
  • No external wounds, so the wound risks of surgical procedures do not apply

If you are interested in stomach reduction, you can request information and arrange a no-obligation appointment for the first consultation.

Methods compared

Three routes to stomach reduction

A balloon for a limited time, gathering from the inside for the long term, or an operation. How the procedures differ.

01Gastric balloonfor a limited time

The balloon takes up space in the stomach and is removed or excreted again after 4 to 12 months. Nothing is changed in the stomach itself; the balloon is meant to help you make smaller portions a habit during this time.

02Endo-sleevepermanent, without an incision

With anchors and threads, the stomach is gathered from the inside until a narrow, tube-like shape remains. Nothing is removed, and the abdominal wall remains untouched. The reduction is designed to be long-term.

03Gastric sleeve surgerysurgical

In the operation, the larger part of the stomach is removed, leaving a narrow tube. It is carried out minimally invasively through several small incisions under general anaesthesia and cannot be reversed. We discuss in the consultation whether an operation is an option for you.

The endo-sleeve: long-term stomach reduction

In the POSE procedure, folds are made in the upper and lower stomach regions during a gastroscopy, without a surgical incision. This reduces the capacity of the stomach; the procedure is designed to be long-term. The feeling of fullness sets in earlier, and food intake decreases. Whether the reduced weight is maintained depends largely on the change in diet.

POSE® 3.0 endo-sleeve

In the POSE® 3.0 procedure, 6 to 8 anchors are placed along the inner wall of the stomach, instead of the previous 14 to 16. With the double-fold strategy and the double-helix technique, each anchor grips two fold layers.

  • 6 to 8 anchors instead of 14 to 16
  • Double-fold strategy: each anchor grips two fold layers
  • Double-helix technique holds the double fold layers
  • Volume reduction: the aim is for approx. 25% of the stomach volume to remain

The treatment is minimally invasive and is carried out as an outpatient procedure or with an overnight stay. You can get information and consultation appointments at Klinik am Seestern in Düsseldorf; for how the procedure works in detail, see the page on the endo-sleeve.

The gastric balloon: temporary stomach reduction

The gastric balloon is an alternative without an operation. From a BMI of 27, it can be placed by our doctors. It reduces the capacity of the stomach for the duration of the treatment, so that you feel full after smaller portions and take in less food. After the balloon has been removed, whether you maintain the weight you have reached depends on your change in diet. Depending on the package chosen, we combine the treatment with a nutrition and exercise programme tailored to you personally.

Personal medical consultation

Four packages are available for treatment with the gastric balloon. You discuss which package suits your situation with our doctors in a personal consultation. We compare the three balloons, for 6 or 12 months or swallowable, on the page on the gastric balloon.

Frequently asked questions

How long is my stay after an endoscopic stomach reduction?

You can usually leave the clinic on the same day. We recommend resting at home for at least 3 to 4 days afterwards.

Who may be considered for an endoscopic stomach reduction?

The procedures for stomach reduction may be considered for people with overweight or obesity with a BMI of approx. 26 to 42 who are prepared to take part in a medically supervised measure for weight loss and to change their diet. We clarify which procedure is suitable in the consultation.

How safe are the procedures?

With the endoscopic procedures, no incisions or access points are made through the abdominal wall. This removes the risks of an external wound, such as wound-healing problems or wound infections. Most patients are back home on the same day. Like any medical procedure, however, these procedures can also have side effects and complications; we inform you about them in detail before the treatment.

What accompanying symptoms occur?

Depending on the procedure chosen, severe nausea and vomiting, fluid deficiency and weakness can occur in the first few days. For these symptoms you receive medication and, if necessary, infusions that support the body’s fluid balance.

What is stomach reduction without surgery?
