Reasons for correcting a nasal hump

  • Wish for a more balanced nasal profile
  • Irregularities or asymmetries in the nasal bridge
  • Wish to adapt the nose shape to personal ideas

What is meant by the correction of a nasal hump?

The correction of a nasal hump refers to a surgical procedure in which a pronounced or irregular hump on the nasal bridge is smoothed. A nasal hump clearly shapes the profile of the nose. It can arise from predisposition, earlier injuries or developmental disorders of the nasal structure. The correction of a nasal hump is a form of rhinoplasty. It is usually carried out for aesthetic reasons, but can also improve breathing if the hump is associated with functional problems.

What options are there for treating a nasal hump?

There are various methods for correcting a nasal hump. Which one is suitable depends on how pronounced the hump is and on the findings. The common procedures include:

The drawings show schematically what changes in the profile: in surgery, the hump is removed; with the filler injection, the irregularities around it are evened out.

01Surgical rhinoplasty

The nasal hump is smoothed by removing bone and cartilage, and the nasal bridge is reshaped.

02Filler injection

With smaller humps, irregularities can be evened out without surgery by injecting fillers. The profile is changed only temporarily; the result is not permanent.

03Open or closed technique

The choice of surgical technique depends on the extent of the procedure. In open rhinoplasty, a small incision is made on the columella, which gives the surgeon better access. With the closed technique, all incisions are inside the nose.

What is the procedure for correcting a nasal hump?

At the beginning is a detailed consultation in which the surgeon discusses your wishes and expectations. The examination of the nasal structure and an analysis of the facial profile are the basis for an individual treatment plan. The operation is usually performed under general anaesthesia. The surgeon removes the nasal hump, smooths the nasal bridge and, if necessary, stabilises the nasal structure. Depending on the extent, the procedure usually takes one to two hours.

After the operation, the nose is stabilised with a splint or a dressing to support healing and protect the new shape. In the first days after the operation, swelling and bruising often occur, which usually subside after about a week. During this time, avoid physical exertion and keep your head elevated.

This is how the correction of your nasal hump proceeds at Klinik am Seestern:

  1. Step 1

    Beforehand

Consultation in Düsseldorf. We discuss your wishes and expectations, examine the nasal structure and analyse your facial profile; your treatment plan emerges from this. You can book the appointment online.

  2. Step 2

    Day of surgery

The procedure. The operation is usually performed under general anaesthesia and, depending on the extent, takes one to two hours. Afterwards, a splint or dressing stabilises the new shape.

  3. Step 3

    The first few days

Rest. The procedure is possible as an outpatient or with one night in the clinic. Keep your head elevated and avoid physical exertion; swelling and bruising usually subside after about a week.

  4. Step 4

    Weeks 1 to 2

Plaster splint. You wear the plaster splint and avoid nicotine, sunbathing and sport; you wash your hair with your head bent forward.

  5. Step 5

    After about 14 days

Back to everyday life. The stitches are removed, and you are back out among people after one to two weeks. In most cases you are unfit for work for about 14 days.

  6. Step 6

    Up to week 6

No glasses. For the first six weeks after the correction, you do not wear glasses.

Possible functional aims of correcting a nasal hump

  • Improvement of nasal breathing if there are also narrowings of the airways

  • Stabilisation of the nasal structure in the case of structural imbalances

What does the result of a nasal hump correction depend on?

The result depends on how pronounced the hump is, the nature of the skin, cartilage and bone, the planning, the surgical technique and the course of healing. The aim is a smoother nasal profile that suits the face. Realistic expectations are important: the final result is only visible after several months, when the swelling has subsided completely.

What restrictions come with correcting a nasal hump?

Temporary restrictions occur after the correction of a nasal hump. Swelling and bruising are normal in the first days after the operation and can temporarily impair breathing. The nose is sensitive in the first weeks; protect it from knocks or pressure. Avoid physical exertion during this time. Most patients can resume light activities after about a week. However, it can take several weeks until the nose has healed completely.

What side effects and risks are there with correcting a nasal hump?

As with any surgical procedure, correcting a nasal hump involves risks and side effects. The most common include infections, bleeding and unwanted scarring. In rare cases, asymmetry or an unsatisfactory aesthetic result can occur, which requires a follow-up correction. Temporary swelling and bruising are normal and usually subside within a few weeks. In rare cases, a change in skin sensitivity or breathing difficulties can occur, especially if the nasal bridge has been changed substantially. Careful aftercare and following the medical instructions help to reduce these risks.

What does a hump correction cost in Düsseldorf?

The costs depend on the procedure and the extent of the operation. You can pay conveniently in instalments through our financing partner medipay. More on this on the Rhinoplasty page. What should I look out for when choosing a doctor for a nasal hump correction?

Make sure the surgeon has experience in nasal surgery. Find out about the medical qualification, for example the specialist title and memberships of professional societies. In the consultation, ask about experience with the planned procedure. Open communication is important so that your wishes and expectations are taken into account. The course of the operation, the possible risks and the necessary aftercare should be explained to you in an understandable way.

The Deutsches Nasenzentrum® at the Klinik am Seestern is headed by Dr. med. Michael Bromba. Feel free to arrange an appointment for a no-obligation consultation.

Frequently asked questions

When does German statutory health insurance pay for a nose correction?

If the operation is necessary because of a functional disorder of the nose, private health insurance or Beihilfe (German civil service allowance) may cover part of the costs. This does not apply to the aesthetic part of the nose correction. Please clarify this beforehand with your private health insurance or Beihilfe. For people with statutory insurance, reimbursement by the German statutory health insurance fund is possible if there is a medical indication. You will receive further information in the personal consultation.

How painful is nose surgery and how long is the nose swollen?

Pain after the operation can usually be treated well with medication. Swelling and bruising under the eyes are possible; they have usually subsided by the time the cast is removed.

How long is the stay in the clinic for a nose correction?

As a rule, you can leave the clinic one day after the correction. In a few exceptional cases you stay for a second night for observation. Smaller procedures can be done on an outpatient basis.

How should I behave straight after a nose correction, how long do I have to wear a cast and when can I return to sport?

In the first one to two weeks you wear a plaster splint applied straight after the correction, with an adhesive or acrylic dressing. Avoid nicotine, sunbathing and sport during this time. Wash your hair with your head bent forward. In the first six weeks after the nose correction you should also not wear glasses.

How long will I be signed off sick after nose surgery?

That depends on which type of nose correction is necessary in your case. It makes a difference whether only the tip of the nose is corrected, the nose is straightened or a comprehensive nose correction is carried out. In most cases you are unfit for work for about 14 days, in exceptional cases somewhat longer. In the consultation you will find out how much time off work you should expect in your case.
