In plastic and aesthetic surgery, the exchange of old implants for new ones is called an implant replacement. A breast implant exchange can be carried out for health reasons or for aesthetic reasons. An exchange of the implants for health reasons is mainly carried out in the case of capsular fibrosis. Here, the connective tissue capsule around the implant contracts. If pain and a feeling of tension in the breast occur together with a deformation of the breast, a change in the shape of the implant, or a shifting or twisting of the implant, we speak of capsular fibrosis. Capsular fibrosis mainly occurs in the first 6 months after an operation and can affect one or both breasts.

Your breast implant exchange takes place at the Klinik am Seestern in Düsseldorf, from the first consultation to the check-up appointments afterwards. The specialist clinic for plastic and aesthetic surgery has its own operating theatres and patient rooms: you are advised and operated on in the place where you also spend the nights after the procedure and where you return for aftercare.

The clinic is on the left bank of the Rhine in Lörick, in the Am Seestern business district near the B7. The U77 runs directly from the main station to the Am Seestern stop, and there is free parking on the grounds. Other health reasons for a breast implant exchange

  • Infections or bacterial colonisation of the implant
  • Defects in breast implants of older generations
  • Slipping or twisting of breast implants
  • Replacement of medically questionable old breast implants (e.g. textured Allergan implants, implants filled with soybean oil or saline)

Replacing breast implants because of an aesthetic wish

A breast implant exchange for aesthetic reasons is the case when the implants drop after pregnancies, weight loss or through the normal ageing process and the breast loses its original shape. Occasionally, female patients also want a larger or a smaller breast after an operation.

How the breast implant exchange works at the Klinik am Seestern

The surgical breast implant exchange takes about two to three hours and is performed under general anaesthesia. The procedure is somewhat more time-consuming than a first-time breast augmentation, because the old implants first have to be removed together with the foreign-body capsule. Often a change of the implant position (above or below the muscle) is also necessary, and in certain cases the skin also has to be tightened. Surgically, the procedure is comparable to the initial implantation.

This is how a breast implant exchange proceeds at the Klinik am Seestern, from consultation to getting back to everyday life:

  1. Step 1

    Beforehand

Consultation in Düsseldorf. In the consultation we examine you, choose the new implant with you and explain the manufacturers’ warranty terms. You can book your appointment online.

  2. Step 2

    Day of surgery

The procedure. The operation takes place under general anaesthesia. First the old implants are removed, in the case of capsular fibrosis together with the capsule, then the new ones are inserted. Afterwards you usually stay one to two nights in the clinic.

  3. Step 3

    The first few days

Taking it easy. Arm mobility may be restricted; tension, bruising and pain, especially beneath the chest muscles, are possible. The symptoms can usually be relieved with medication.

  4. Step 4

    After about 2 weeks

Back to everyday life. After about two weeks you are usually back out among people.

Aims of a breast implant exchange

  • Adjusting the size or shape of the implants
  • Treatment of health problems after the initial implantation, e.g. in the case of capsular fibrosis or displacement of the implant
  • Reduction of future health risks by replacing certain breast implants from the company Allergan

Good to know about breast implant exchange

A breast implant exchange is not significantly more involved than the initial implantation. If there is capsular fibrosis, the implant capsule is removed as well. Another important point is the choice of the new implant, which we discuss with you in the consultation. Replacing the breast implants can usually be done through the existing scars, so in these cases no additional scars are formed.

We use branded implants that are approved in the EU and additionally have approval from the US health authority FDA. We explain the manufacturers’ warranty terms to you in the consultation.

What can be added to the exchange

Every exchange brings new implants. What else is needed depends on why the exchange is carried out and how the breast has changed.

What does a breast implant exchange cost in Düsseldorf? Costs and financing

The cost of replacing the implants depends on the extent of the procedure, the number of implants to be replaced and other factors. For a medically necessary operation, the cost is usually lower than that of a regular breast augmentation.

If you took out follow-up cost insurance at the time of the initial procedure, it covers the cost of a medically necessary breast implant exchange, depending on the insurance terms. Without such insurance, German statutory health insurance funds usually do not cover the costs; for privately insured patients this depends on the individual tariff. Financing is possible through our financing partner, more on this under Financing your treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Does replacing my breast implants lead to new scars?

Not necessarily. If no skin tightening is required, the implants can usually be exchanged through the existing scar.

What accompanying symptoms do I need to expect with my breast implant exchange?

In the first days after the operation, arm mobility may be restricted. Tension, bruising and pain, especially beneath the chest muscles, are possible. The symptoms can usually be relieved with medication.

How long can the new implants stay in the body after an exchange?

That cannot be said in general terms. If no complications such as encapsulation occur, implants of the new generation can stay in the body for many years.

Can the condition originally desired at the first operation be achieved by replacing the implants?

That depends on the individual situation, which is assessed personally in the consultation. The aim of the corrective operation is to come as close as possible to the originally desired result within what is medically feasible.
