FUT hair transplant in Düsseldorf: consultation, procedure and aftercare in one place

Consultation room of the clinic
Consultation room

Your FUT hair transplant takes place at Klinik am Seestern in Düsseldorf, from the first consultation to the follow-up appointment after about 12 months. In the specialist clinic for plastic and aesthetic surgery, hair transplants are carried out under sterile operating theatre conditions, and the procedure is outpatient.

The clinic is on the left bank of the Rhine in Lörick, in the Am Seestern office district near the B7. The U77 runs directly from the main station to the Am Seestern stop, and there is free parking on site. This makes the appointments after the procedure, for example to have the stitches removed, easy to reach from all over Düsseldorf, from Meerbusch, Neuss and the surrounding area.

What is the FUT method?

The FUT technique is, alongside the FUE method, the second method of hair transplantation that is recognised today. FUT stands for Follicular Unit Transplantation. The donor hair is taken as a strip of skin about 1 to 1.5 cm wide (a “strip”) from the donor area at the back of the head. This is also where the alternative name of the method comes from: strip harvesting or strip method. Because only a narrow area has to be shaved, it is also an option for women and for longer hair.

Methods compared

FUT or FUE?

Both methods transplant your own hair follicles from the ring of hair. How they obtain the follicles determines the scar, the quantity and the shaving.

The strip of skin containing up to 3,000 follicular units is taken from the back of the head; hair transplant technicians divide it into individual grafts under stereo microscopes. The extraction site is closed with the trichophytic wound closure, and hair grows through the scar. This allows more freedom in choosing a hairstyle.

The hair follicles are taken individually, without a strip of skin and without a linear scar; pinpoint micro-scars remain. FUE usually requires a larger, healthy and dense donor area, is more time-consuming and is used in particular for smaller areas.

Preparation of the follicular units that have been taken

After the strip of skin has been taken, which can carry up to 3,000 follicular units (grafts), trained hair transplant technicians divide the strip under stereo microscopes into individual hair follicles. The grafts are then prepared for implantation, stored chilled and kept moist at all times so that the hair roots do not die. This protects the grafts from external influences until they are implanted. The FUT technique is a procedure that has been used for decades. It is particularly suitable for large treatment areas because many grafts can be obtained in one session.

The result of a hair transplant is influenced by the experience of the surgeon and the surgeon’s team of hair transplant technicians, by compliance with hygiene and material standards and by the medical technology used. At Klinik am Seestern, hair transplants are carried out under sterile operating theatre conditions.

When is the FUT strip method an option?

  • If the donor area at the back of the head is thin, or after previous hair transplants
  • If many grafts are needed in one session
  • For patients who do not want to shave their hair short

Wound closure after the strip has been taken

The site from which the strip of skin was taken is closed with a suture. The stitches can be removed about 14 days after the procedure by us or by your GP.

At Klinik am Seestern, we use what is known as trichophytic wound closure for this. With this technique, hair can grow through the sutured area, so that the scar is usually covered by hair. This allows more freedom in choosing a hairstyle, even with shorter haircuts.

How does hair transplantation with the FUT method work?

The recipient area is prepared for the grafts in a precise arrangement with small openings about the size of a pore, known as slits. Our hair transplant technicians then insert the follicular units one by one into the recipient area. The instruments are chosen to suit the properties of the hair follicles.

The treatment process at a glance: FUT technique

  1. Step 1

    Beforehand

Your treatment plan. Before the procedure, the treatment plan, including the marked hairline, is discussed one last time with your treating doctor. You will be told the expected duration of treatment: FUT hair transplants at Klinik am Seestern take between 3 and 6 hours.

  2. Step 2

    Day of surgery

The strip of skin. The procedure is carried out under local anaesthesia. The procedure begins with the removal of the strip of skin containing the hair roots to be transplanted from the ring of hair.

  3. Step 3

    Preparation

Under the microscope. Under stereo microscopes, our hair transplant technicians obtain the follicular units. Between extraction and transplantation, the follicular units are stored chilled.

  4. Step 4

    Insertion

Into the bald areas. The recipient area is prepared for the grafts using the slit technique. Our hair transplant technicians insert the follicular units into the bald areas. They pay particular attention to the natural direction of hair growth and the planned hairline. A solution to soothe the scalp is then applied.

  5. Step 5

    The first few days

The resting phase. After the procedure you receive the most important information and recommendations on how to behave during the first few days. Wash the transplanted hair in the first few days only as instructed by Klinik am Seestern. The hair is now in a resting phase.

  6. Step 6

    Weeks 2 to 4

Stitches and healing. The stitches can be removed about 14 days after the procedure by us or by your GP. The donor area usually heals in 2 to 3 weeks, and after 2 weeks you are back out among people. You avoid sport for 4 weeks.

  7. Step 7

    After about 12 months

The result. The result of the hair transplant can be assessed after about 12 months. The transplanted hair has then grown in and is a few centimetres long.

What does an FUT hair transplant cost in Düsseldorf? Costs and financing

The cost of an FUT hair transplant depends on the extent of the procedure. With the same number of grafts, FUT is somewhat cheaper than FUE, which usually requires a larger, healthy and dense donor area and is more time-consuming. How many grafts are possible in your case is something we discuss in the consultation at Klinik am Seestern. Afterwards we will prepare a no-obligation treatment quote for you. Financing is possible through our financing partner; more on this under Financing your treatment.

Frequently asked questions

How many grafts can be transplanted per session?

For aesthetic and medical reasons, the upper limit is about 3,000 grafts. For most patients, this corresponds to slightly fewer than 6,000 individual hairs. How many grafts are possible in your case is something we discuss in the consultation.

Does the back of the head have to be shaved for an FUT hair transplant?

Only a narrow area at the back of the head where the strip of skin is taken. Once the suture has been closed, this area is covered by the surrounding hair.

Do scars form in the donor area?

An FUT hair transplant leaves a narrow, linear scar. The wound is closed in such a way that hair normally grows through the scar again (known as trichophytic closure). As a result, the scar is usually not very noticeable over time.

How long does the healing process take for an FUT in the donor area?

As a rule, 2 to 3 weeks. During this time, avoid direct sunlight, sauna and solarium so as not to disturb healing. You should avoid sport for 4 weeks.

For how many treatments is the donor hair at the back of the head enough?

As a rule, 3 to 4 sessions are possible. Even then, there is usually only one scar, because the previous scar is usually removed as well in a follow-up procedure. It is covered by the remaining donor hair.

What does an FUT hair transplant cost in Düsseldorf?

The costs depend on the extent of the procedure. With the same number of grafts, FUT is somewhat cheaper than the more time-consuming FUE. After your consultation at Klinik am Seestern, you will receive a no-obligation treatment quote. Financing is possible through our financing partner.
