Rhinoplasty in Düsseldorf: consultation, surgery and aftercare in one place

Consultation room of the clinic
Consultation room

Your nose correction takes place at Klinik am Seestern in Düsseldorf, from the first consultation to aftercare; the Deutsches Nasenzentrum® is also based there. The specialist clinic for plastic and aesthetic surgery has its own operating theatres and patient rooms: you are advised and operated on in the building, spend the night after the procedure here and return for the follow-up appointments.

The clinic is on the left bank of the Rhine in Lörick, in the Am Seestern office district near the B7. The U77 runs directly from the main station to the Am Seestern stop, and there is free parking on site. This makes us just as easy to reach from all over Düsseldorf as from Meerbusch, Neuss and the surrounding area.

Reasons for a nose correction

  • Wish for a changed shape or size of the nose
  • Wish for more harmonious proportions of nose and face
  • Problems with nasal breathing

The nose is in the middle of the face. Shape and size, but also asymmetries or misalignments, are therefore quickly noticed when looking in the mirror. Nose operations are among the common procedures in aesthetic surgery.

Aesthetic or medical nose surgery

Many people want a nose that blends in inconspicuously with the face. But aesthetic reasons are not the only ones that lead to a nose correction. The correction also often serves medical purposes, for example improving nasal breathing.

Not every nose is suitable for a nose correction

Whether reduction or enlargement: the team at Klinik am Seestern Düsseldorf performs only nose corrections that maintain or improve the function of the nose. Requests that would result in a deterioration of function, especially of breathing, are ones we cannot take responsibility for. We ask for your understanding.

Aims of a nose correction

  • More harmonious relationship between nose and face
  • Correction of malpositions or crooked positioning, asymmetries or nasal humps
  • Improvement of nasal function and of breathing through the nose when there is a functional disorder

Rhinoplasty at Klinik am Seestern

Different surgical methods for nose correction

Which technique is suitable depends on where on the nose the operation is to be carried out: will work be done only inside or also on the outside (closed or open technique), are changes to the soft tissue required or adjustments to the bone? It must also be checked whether there are pathological findings in nasal function that limit the possibilities for shaping.

Correcting humped and asymmetric noses

So-called long, humped noses are common; these can be corrected by taking down the bony and cartilaginous bridge of the nose and then straightening it. Other noses are too wide or sit at an unfavourable angle to the upper lip. Still others are asymmetric or crooked and require a different approach.

There are therefore many factors that influence the individual possibilities of a nose correction.

Methods compared

Closed or open technique

Which technique is an option depends on the extent of the procedure. The drawings show schematically where the incisions are.

Diagram of the closed technique in profile: the incisions are inside the nose, above the nostril

01Closed techniqueincisions only inside

Surgery is performed from the inside only. In the closed technique, all incisions are inside the nose; whether it is an option depends on the extent of the procedure.

no incision
Diagram of the open technique in profile: incisions inside at the edge of the nostril and a small incision across the columella

02Open techniquesmall incision at the columella

In addition to the incisions inside, there is a small incision at the columella. It allows better access; when it is needed also depends on the extent of the procedure.

Nose surgery under general anaesthesia or local anaesthesia

A larger nose correction is usually carried out under general anaesthesia, smaller nose operations in some cases also under local anaesthesia (local numbing). After the operation, marked swelling of the nose as well as bruising are normal; the healing phase varies from person to person. Operated noses have usually healed after 2 to 3 weeks. Regular cooling as instructed by the doctor can support healing.

This is how your nose correction proceeds at Klinik am Seestern, from the consultation until it has healed:

  1. Step 1

    Beforehand

Consultation in Düsseldorf. We discuss your wishes, the anatomical conditions, the suitable surgical technique and all risks and side effects. Take your time with the planning; you can book your appointment online.

  2. Step 2

    Day of surgery

The procedure. The operation takes about 1 to 2 hours; a larger nose correction is performed under general anaesthesia. A plaster splint with an adhesive or acrylic dressing is then applied.

  3. Step 3

    First night

In the clinic. As a rule, you leave the clinic one day after the correction; in a few exceptional cases you stay a second night for observation. Swelling and bruising are normal; cooling as instructed by the doctor supports healing.

  4. Step 4

    Weeks 1 to 2

Plaster splint. You wear the plaster splint, do without nicotine, sunbathing and sport, and wash your hair with your head bent forward. By the time the cast is removed, swelling and bruising have usually subsided.

  5. Step 5

    After about 14 days

Removing the stitches. The stitches are removed after about 14 days; you are back out among people after one to two weeks. Operated noses have usually healed after 2 to 3 weeks; in most cases you are unfit for work for 14 days.

  6. Step 6

    Up to week 6

No glasses. Please do not wear glasses for the first six weeks after the nose correction.

Nose and face as an overall picture

Every face is individual, and so is every nose. Together they form an overall picture that patients have become used to over many years.

For the team at Klinik am Seestern it is therefore important that face and nose also match each other after a nose correction. The aim of a nose correction is for the nose to fit into the overall picture after the procedure and for the proportions to be harmonious. A nose correction should therefore be planned and carried out by doctors with experience in nasal surgery who take your individual facial features into account.

Briefing on risks and side effects

Before a nose correction, in addition to the anatomical conditions and the suitable surgical technique, all risks and side effects of a nose correction are discussed in detail. Weigh things up calmly and take your time with the planning. This makes it more likely that later dissatisfaction and further corrections can be avoided. As part of the medical consultation, we work out the plan for your nose correction together with you.

Frequently asked questions

When does German statutory health insurance pay for a nose correction?

If the operation is necessary because of a functional disorder of the nose, private health insurance or Beihilfe (German civil service allowance) may cover part of the costs. This does not apply to the aesthetic part of the nose correction. Please speak to your private health insurance or Beihilfe about this. For people with statutory insurance, reimbursement by German statutory health insurance is in principle not possible for treatment at Klinik am Seestern.

How painful is nose surgery and how long is the nose swollen?

Pain after the procedure can usually be treated with medication. Swelling and bruising under the eyes are possible; they have usually subsided by the time the cast is removed.

How long is the stay in the clinic for a nose correction?

As a rule, you can leave the clinic again one day after the correction. In a few exceptional cases you stay for a second night for observation.

How should I behave straight after a nose correction, how long do I have to wear a cast and when can I do sport again?

In the first one to two weeks, wear the plaster splint applied straight after the correction, with an adhesive or acrylic dressing. Avoid nicotine, sunbathing and sport during this time. Wash your hair with your head bent forward. In the first six weeks after the nose correction you should also not wear glasses.

How long will I be signed off sick after nose surgery?

That depends on which type of nose correction is necessary and advisable in your case. It makes a difference whether only the tip of the nose is corrected, the nose is straightened or a comprehensive nose correction is carried out. In most cases you are unfit for work for 14 days, in exceptional cases somewhat longer. Your treating doctor at Klinik am Seestern will tell you how much time off work to expect in your case.
