GLP-1 therapy at Klinik am Seestern is medically supervised. On this page you can find out how GLP-1 therapy works, who it is an option for and how the treatment proceeds.

The treatment requires no surgical procedure. The prerequisites are that there are no medical reasons against it, that a doctor’s prescription is in place and that you are willing to change your eating and exercise behaviour permanently.

  • Procedure: not required
  • Use: injection once a week

The first consultation, the medical briefing and the check-up appointments take place at our specialist clinic in Düsseldorf-Lörick, on the left bank of the Rhine in the Am Seestern office district near the B7. With the U77 you can travel from the main station to the Am Seestern stop without changing, and you can park on the grounds free of charge. If you cannot make it to the clinic, you can also have the first conversation by video chat or telephone.

How does GLP-1 work?

GLP-1 therapy is a drug treatment without surgery. It intervenes in the body’s own regulation of appetite and satiety, which is often out of balance in cases of overweight.

Studies have shown that GLP-1 receptor agonists can reduce the feeling of hunger and prolong the feeling of fullness.

GLP-1 stands for “Glucagon-like Peptide-1”. The active substances used imitate the effect of this gut hormone produced by the body, which is formed in the digestive tract when food is taken in and is involved in regulating the blood sugar level. They can promote the release of insulin in the pancreas, so that sugar is taken up better by the body’s cells. The craving for sugary foods and for larger amounts can decrease as a result. A medically supervised GLP-1 therapy can in many cases also ease bouts of ravenous hunger.

Effect on three levels

GLP-1 therapy acts mainly on three levels:

Slowing of stomach emptying

A longer-lasting feeling of fullness between meals

Influence on appetite regulation in the brain

The aim is an improvement in blood sugar balance and a gradual reduction in body fat.

Whether and how quickly this works for you cannot be predicted in advance. The treatment can be a foundation for changing your lifestyle in the long term.

The treatment includes a detailed first consultation, in which we discuss your medical history and your goals, and a briefing with a doctor from Klinik am Seestern. We then draw up an individual therapy plan together.

Who is GLP-1 therapy an option for?

GLP-1 therapy requires no surgical procedure and is based on many years of scientific research. It can be a treatment option for people for whom surgery is not an option or who do not want surgery. This treatment, too, has side effects and risks, which we explain to you in advance.

GLP-1 therapy as part of an overall concept

As with all treatment options, the same applies to GLP-1 therapy: medical support alone does not lead to long-term success. It is an aid. So that you can maintain the weight you have reached, it is important to use the duration of the therapy to change your eating and exercise habits permanently.

That is why Klinik am Seestern offers GLP-1 therapy as part of a treatment programme with accompanying support.

Components of the treatment programme

  • Personal support: a personal contact person and regular contact with your treating doctor at Klinik am Seestern.
  • Digital support: 12-month access to our app with a smart body scale and health tracker. The course of your treatment is documented, and the therapy can be adjusted if needed.
  • 3D body analysis: analysis of your body composition with a 3D scan, to track changes in body circumferences, physiological values, balance and posture.
  • Combination with other methods: After medical review, the therapy can be combined with other treatments, for example after the removal of a gastric balloon.

You can find videos of Klinik am Seestern in our media library.

GLP-1 therapy, gastric balloon or endo-sleeve?

Three medically supervised paths that differ in whether and how anything is changed in the stomach. The most important differences at a glance.

01GLP-1 therapywithout a procedure

The active substance acts like GLP-1, the body’s own hormone. It can reduce the feeling of hunger and empty the stomach more slowly, so that the feeling of fullness lasts longer. Nothing is changed in the stomach itself.

What can GLP-1 therapy bring about?

GLP-1 receptor agonists can reduce the feeling of hunger and prolong the feeling of fullness, and in this way support weight loss. How much weight you lose depends on your starting situation, the dosage, tolerability and your changes to diet and exercise.

The active substances act on the receptors in the brain that control appetite and can influence the so-called set point, that is, the weight that the body tries to maintain on a biological level.

Because you may feel less hungry during the therapy, it may be easier to change your eating habits and to exercise regularly. You should use this time to develop a healthier lifestyle.

What goals does GLP-1 therapy pursue?

Besides weight loss, it is equally important to maintain the new weight in the long term. That is why GLP-1 therapy at Klinik am Seestern includes further treatment and consultation services. It rests on five pillars:

New biological balance

The doctor selects a suitable active substance that acts on the receptors in the brain responsible for appetite regulation. Put simply, during the treatment the body can aim for a lower weight set point.

Change in behaviour

For the effect of GLP-1 therapy to be maintained in the long term, you need to change your previous habits. Your support team at Klinik am Seestern, consisting of doctors and other specialist staff, supports you in this.

Routine and documentation of progress

It helps to keep the goal in view and to develop your own routine for documenting your progress. Smaller interim goals count too. That is why, at the start of GLP-1 therapy, you receive 12-month access to our app. A smart body scale and a health tracker are connected to the app so that you and our team at Klinik am Seestern can follow the course of treatment and adjust the therapy if needed.

Documentation of body values

We look not only at weight but also at your health as a whole and your body composition. To do so, before the start of GLP-1 therapy we record your current condition with a 3D body scan and create a digital representation. This makes it possible to follow over time how body circumferences, physiological values, balance and posture change. After the therapy has ended, we repeat the 3D body scan and compare the values.

Assessment of further treatment options

In the first consultation, we clarify whether GLP-1 therapy is an option for you, whether it is sufficient for your goals or whether it should be combined with other treatment options at Klinik am Seestern Düsseldorf, before, during or after another therapy. In some cases, GLP-1 therapy can also be used before the start of another treatment.

Botulinum toxin injections into the stomach: not an approved therapy

Patients at Klinik am Seestern repeatedly ask whether botulinum toxin injections into the stomach are offered. Such offers exist mainly abroad, and occasionally in Germany too.

It is important to know the following: there is no approved therapy using the neurotoxin botulinum toxin A for the treatment of overweight or obesity. The idea is to paralyse the stomach muscles so that stomach emptying slows down.

However, the musculature of the stomach is considerably stronger than, for example, the muscles of the face. A considerably larger quantity of botulinum toxin A would therefore be needed, injected during a gastroscopy. If used in the wrong place, this can lead to complications; in other cases, no effect occurs. Scientific studies have so far been unable to demonstrate a reliable effect.

In addition, the effect of botulinum toxin A lasts only about 3 months. To maintain the effect, a further gastroscopy under sedation or general anaesthesia would be needed every three months, with the risks, side effects and downtime associated with each. Our team will be happy to advise you on the treatment options.

Frequently asked questions

How does GLP-1 therapy work?

GLP-1 receptor agonists act like GLP-1, the body’s own hormone, which is released in the gut after a meal and contributes to the feeling of fullness. They slow stomach emptying, so that the feeling of fullness lasts longer after a smaller amount of food. They also act on the appetite centres in the brain, which can reduce the craving for snacks between meals and for larger portions. Overall, the treatment can lead to you taking in fewer calories and reducing your weight.

Who can have GLP-1 therapy?

GLP-1 receptor agonists are prescription-only. Whether a treatment is an option for you is decided by the doctor after a careful medical history and assessment of your health situation, taking into account, for example, your BMI and weight-related conditions such as high blood pressure, raised cholesterol levels or type 2 diabetes. The therapy is not suitable, among others, for pregnant and breastfeeding women, for people with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis and for people with an allergy to the active substances or their components. If you are unsure whether the therapy is suitable for you, you can make use of a first consultation at Klinik am Seestern Düsseldorf on site, by video chat or by telephone. The monthly costs for GLP-1 therapy start at €330 and cover the first consultation, the medical briefing, the ongoing support and access to our app with smart scales and health tracker. After the examination, you will receive an individual quote and a treatment plan. If GLP-1 therapy is not suitable for you, we will advise you on other options for weight reduction.

What are the possible side effects of GLP-1 therapy?

As with all medical treatments, undesirable side effects can occur. The most common include: 1. Nausea, which can be mild or more pronounced and occurs mainly in the first weeks of treatment. 2. Vomiting, especially at the start of the therapy. 3. Diarrhoea. 4. Constipation. 5. Abdominal pain or mild stomach cramps. 6. Reduced appetite. 7. Dizziness or light-headedness. 8. Blood sugar fluctuations: in people with diabetes, the risk of low blood sugar can be increased, especially in combination with other blood-sugar-lowering medicines. 9. Gallstones: in rare cases there may be an increased risk. 10. Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), which can occur rarely. 11. Possible effects on the thyroid, which are currently still being investigated. Many complaints arise as follow-on effects: vomiting or diarrhoea, for example, can lead to a lack of fluid, which can show itself as headaches or tiredness. Drink enough during the therapy and eat regularly and in a balanced way. Further risks and side effects not mentioned here are possible. Before GLP-1 therapy begins at Klinik am Seestern Düsseldorf, consultation and briefing take place in two stages with our patient advice team and our doctors. If side effects occur, you can reach us by telephone, chat or e-mail; we will discuss how to proceed or arrange a check-up appointment with your treating doctor, who will review the dosage and adjust the treatment plan if needed. In the event of acute symptoms or signs of a severe allergic reaction (for example swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing or a very rapid heartbeat), please seek medical help immediately from your GP practice or the nearest emergency department.

What if I have forgotten a dose?

If you have forgotten a dose, you should make it up as soon as possible, unless the next dose is already due shortly. In that case, skip the forgotten dose and continue with the next one as usual. Do not make up for a forgotten dose by taking a double dose. Follow the instructions in the package leaflet. If you are unsure how to proceed, please contact your contact person at Klinik am Seestern.

How can I end the treatment?

Do not end GLP-1 therapy on your own, but in consultation with your doctor. As a rule, it is recommended to reduce the dose gradually over a period of about 4 to 5 weeks, so that your body can adjust to the lower dose and large fluctuations in blood sugar level are avoided. In addition, discuss with your doctor how you will shape your diet and lifestyle after the end of the therapy in order to maintain your weight.

Can I combine GLP-1 therapy with another treatment?

Yes, after medical review. The therapy can, for example, follow the removal of a gastric balloon or begin before another treatment. We will discuss what makes sense in your case in the first consultation.

Does German statutory health insurance cover GLP-1 therapy?

For weight loss, German statutory health insurance generally does not cover the costs; the therapy is a self-pay service. Financing is possible through our financing partner.
