The correction of your nostrils is carried out by the Deutsches Nasenzentrum® of the Klinik am Seestern in Düsseldorf. The specialist clinic for plastic and aesthetic surgery has its own operating theatres and patient rooms; most patients go home on the same day and return to the same building for their follow-up appointments.

The clinic is on the left bank of the Rhine in Lörick, in the Am Seestern business district near the B7. With the U77 you reach the Am Seestern stop directly from the main station, and you can park free of charge on the grounds. From Düsseldorf, Meerbusch, Neuss and the surrounding area, the journey to the check-ups is short.

Reasons for a correction of the nostrils

  • Noticeably large nostrils
  • Shape of the nasal wings that does not match the rest of the nose
  • Uneven or disproportionate nostrils

What is meant by a correction of the nostrils?

A correction of the nostrils is a surgical procedure that changes the shape, size or symmetry of the nostrils. Patients who decide on this procedure often find their nostrils too large, too small, asymmetrical or disproportionate to the rest of the nose. In some cases, altered nostrils can also cause functional problems such as breathing difficulties. The correction can therefore have aesthetic and functional aims.

Possible functional aims of a correction of the nostrils

  • Improved nasal breathing where nostrils that are too narrow obstruct the airflow

  • Widening of narrowed nostrils by reshaping the nasal openings

  • Stability of the nasal wings through structural adjustments

01Reduction of the nostrils

In the case of large nostrils, the surgeon can remove tissue from the nasal wings and reshape the nostrils so that they look more proportionate.

In the case of asymmetrical nostrils, the surgeon can aim for a more even shape through targeted incisions and reshaping.

How does the treatment work for a correction of the nostrils?

It begins with a detailed consultation in which the surgeon discusses your wishes and expectations. Examining the structure of the nose and the facial features is the basis for choosing the approach. Aesthetic and functional aspects are taken into account.

The procedure is usually carried out under local anaesthesia with sedation or under general anaesthesia, depending on the extent of the correction and in agreement with the patient. The incisions are made either on the nasal wings or inside the nose. The operation usually takes between one and two hours.

After the operation, the nose is stabilised with fine dressings or splints to secure the new shape and support healing. Most patients can go home on the same day but should take it easy in the first few days and avoid physical exertion. Regular follow-up appointments serve to monitor the healing process.

This is how the correction of your nostrils proceeds at the Klinik am Seestern:

  1. Step 1

    Beforehand

Consultation in Düsseldorf. We discuss your wishes and expectations and examine the structure of the nose and the facial features, aesthetically as well as functionally. You can book the appointment online.

  2. Step 2

    Day of surgery

The procedure. Depending on its extent and by agreement, it is carried out under local anaesthesia with sedation or under general anaesthesia and usually takes one to two hours. The incisions are made on the nasal wings or inside the nose.

  3. Step 3

    On the same day

Going home. Fine dressings or splints secure the new shape. Most patients go home on the same day; take it easy in the first few days.

  4. Step 4

    Weeks 1 to 2

Splint and rest. You avoid nicotine, sunbathing and sport, and wash your hair with your head bent forward; regular follow-up appointments accompany the healing.

  5. Step 5

    After about 14 days

Back to everyday life. The stitches are removed; you are back out among people after one to two weeks.

  6. Step 6

    Up to week 6

No glasses. You do not wear glasses for the first six weeks after the procedure.

What does the result of a correction of the nostrils depend on?

The result depends on the starting situation, the nature of the skin and tissue, the planning, the surgical technique and the course of healing. If breathing difficulties are caused by nostrils that are too narrow, the procedure can also improve nasal breathing. The final result is usually visible after a few weeks, once the swelling has subsided and the structure of the nose has stabilised.

What restrictions come with a correction of the nostrils?

After a correction of the nostrils, temporary restrictions occur. Swelling and slight bruising around the nose are normal and usually subside within the first week. In the first few days, nasal breathing can be impaired by swelling, and a feeling of pressure may occur. The nose is sensitive in the first few weeks; protect it from knocks or pressure. In the first few weeks, avoid physical exertion and follow the medical aftercare instructions precisely.

What side effects and risks are there with a correction of the nostrils?

As with any surgical procedure, a correction of the nostrils involves risks and side effects. The most common include infections, bleeding and scarring. In rare cases, undesirable aesthetic results can occur that make a revision necessary. Temporary swelling, bruising and restricted nasal breathing are normal and usually subside within a few weeks. In rare cases, a change in skin sensitivity or problems with nasal function can occur. Careful aftercare and compliance with the medical instructions help to reduce these risks.

What does a correction of the nostrils cost in Düsseldorf?

The costs depend on the extent of the correction and on whether it is combined with further procedures on the nose. After your consultation at the Klinik am Seestern you will receive a no-obligation treatment quote. Financing is possible through our financing partner; more on this under Financing your treatment.

What should I look for when choosing a doctor for a correction of the nostrils?

Make sure the surgeon has experience in nasal surgery. Find out about the medical qualification, for example the specialist title and memberships of professional societies. In the consultation, ask about experience with the planned procedure. Open communication is important so that your wishes and expectations are taken into account. The course of the operation, the possible risks and the necessary aftercare should be explained to you in an understandable way.

The Deutsches Nasenzentrum® at the Klinik am Seestern is headed by Dr. med. Michael Bromba. Feel free to arrange an appointment for a no-obligation consultation.

Frequently asked questions

When does German statutory health insurance pay for a nose correction?

If the operation is necessary because of a functional disorder of the nose, private health insurance or Beihilfe (German civil service allowance) may cover part of the costs. This does not apply to the aesthetic part of the nose correction. Please clarify this beforehand with your private health insurance or Beihilfe. For people with statutory insurance, reimbursement by the German statutory health insurance fund is possible if there is a medical indication. You will receive further information in the personal consultation.

How painful is nose surgery and how long is the nose swollen?

Pain after the operation can usually be treated well with medication. Swelling and bruising under the eyes are possible; they have usually subsided by the time the cast is removed.

How long is the stay in the clinic for a nose correction?

As a rule, you can leave the clinic one day after the correction. In a few exceptional cases you stay for a second night for observation. Smaller procedures can be done on an outpatient basis.

How should I behave straight after a nose correction, how long do I have to wear a cast and when can I return to sport?

In the first one to two weeks you wear a plaster splint applied straight after the correction, with an adhesive or acrylic dressing. Avoid nicotine, sunbathing and sport during this time. Wash your hair with your head bent forward. In the first six weeks after the nose correction you should also not wear glasses.

How long will I be signed off sick after nose surgery?

That depends on which type of nose correction is necessary in your case. It makes a difference whether only the tip of the nose is corrected, the nose is straightened or a comprehensive nose correction is carried out. In most cases you are unfit for work for about 14 days, in exceptional cases somewhat longer. In the consultation you will find out how much time off work you should expect in your case.
