What is scalp micropigmentation suitable for?

  • for styling a shaved bald head
  • for visually thickening hair or concealing visible scalp
  • for concealing scars
  • for emphasising hairlines and contours

Scalp micropigmentation as an alternative or addition to a hair transplant

Scalp micropigmentation at Klinik am Seestern is a procedure in which fine dots of colour are introduced into the scalp. The pigments are biodegradable, and the effect lasts several years. Alongside hair transplantation using the FUE and FUT techniques, we thus offer a treatment method that visually thickens the appearance of the hair without a surgical procedure.

How does scalp micropigmentation work?

In scalp micropigmentation (SMP for short, or scalp pigmentation), colour pigments are introduced into the scalp using the Visual Hair Densification technique (VHD for short; in German: optische Haarverdichtung). The procedure is comparable to permanent make-up but places higher demands on professional and technical execution. For this reason, SMP at Klinik am Seestern is medically supervised and carried out under the clinic’s hygiene requirements. The effect lasts several years, is visible immediately after the treatment and requires no incision.

Who is scalp micropigmentation an option for?

SMP does not treat the cause of hair loss, but it can visually conceal it, regardless of its type, that is, in hereditary, diffuse, illness-related or alopecia areata hair loss. It can be considered if a hair transplant is not possible for medical reasons or is unlikely to lead to the desired result. Anyone who does not want a surgical procedure or who would like to visually complement the result of a hair transplant can also seek advice about SMP. The areas of application can be roughly divided into three areas:

Areas of application

Full baldness, thinning hair or scars

Three areas in which the pigmentation changes the appearance of the hair visually.

The pigments imitate short hair stubble, similar to a very short shave of about 0.5 mm.

02Thinning hairvisually denser

In thinning, sparse or fine hair, the areas of the scalp that show through are pigmented in a targeted way, so that the hair looks denser.

not strictly necessary

Scalp micropigmentation on the scalp

What we pay attention to in scalp micropigmentation

The hair on your head shapes the appearance of the face. That is why it is important to us that the result suits your type and looks natural. At Klinik am Seestern we rely on individual consultations and selected materials that are used only for SMP.

Scalp micropigmentation or hair transplant?

SMP can be used in addition to a hair transplant or as the sole method. Which of the two procedures is better suited to you depends on your hair situation and your expectations.

In this way, SMP can also be used where a hair transplant is not an option, for example if the donor hair in the ring of hair is not sufficient or not suitable, or the hair loss is already far advanced (full baldness). The pigmentation then imitates hair stubble of varying density and thickness in different shades of colour, so that the overall appearance looks denser.

The course of scalp micropigmentation at a glance

This is how scalp micropigmentation proceeds at Klinik am Seestern, from the consultation to the refresh:

  1. Step 1

    Before the treatment

Individual consultation: Before the treatment, we discuss with you which pigment shade suits your type. We choose the sterile colour pigments together with you. Determining the start of the hair and the hairline: A natural-looking start of the hair is important because this area is noticed most clearly. The recommended hairline is drawn on with a kohl pencil.

  2. Step 2

    One week before

Sun, peelings, toupee. Avoid strong sun and UV radiation for one week before the treatment and refrain from peelings or exfoliating treatments. Anyone who wears a toupee must take the hairpiece off permanently one week before the treatment.

  3. Step 3

    24 hours before

Nothing stimulating. Do without coffee, tea, caffeinated soft drinks and other stimulating drinks for 24 hours before the treatment. Also avoid vasodilating agents and medicines such as alcohol or acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), as well as seafood, spicy food and large amounts of raw meat.

  4. Step 4

    First treatment

Under sterile conditions. The treatment takes place under sterile conditions in our treatment rooms. Shaving the hair is often necessary, and we do this on site. The scalp is then degreased with a lotion and prepared for the treatment. The treatment itself takes between one and three hours, depending on the size and density of the area.

  5. Step 5

    After the treatment

Letting it heal. Do not wash the pigmented area during the first three days after the treatment. Do without alcohol, strong UV radiation, sauna and swimming pool as well as dry cold for eight days so that the skin can heal undisturbed. Do not remove the skin crust that forms after the pigmentation by rubbing or scratching.

  6. Step 6

    From the fourth day

Care. From the fourth day, for about ten days you apply a care product that we recommend to you.

  7. Step 7

    Further treatments

Three to four times. The treatment is repeated three to four times at intervals of one to two weeks.

  8. Step 8

    After 1 to 1.5 years

Check-up and refresh. About one to one and a half years after the last treatment, we decide together at the follow-up appointment whether a pigment refresh makes sense. We recommend further refreshes about every four to five years.

Frequently asked questions

Does the scalp have to be shaved before scalp micropigmentation?

In most cases, the scalp is shaved before the first treatment, at least in the treatment area, so that the desired effect of short hair stubble can be achieved well. If scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is meant to conceal a scalp that shows through, shaving is not strictly necessary. Whether shaving makes sense is something we discuss with you in the consultation at Klinik am Seestern.

Is scalp micropigmentation painful?

SMP is generally less painful than a tattoo and can usually be carried out without anaesthesia. By cooling the scalp, the pigmentation is often only slightly noticeable. However, how pain is perceived varies from person to person. On request, we anaesthetise the scalp locally.

How many sessions are required for scalp micropigmentation?

As a rule, four sessions take place at intervals of one to two weeks. After about 18 months, it is decided at a follow-up appointment whether a refresh makes sense. After that, further refreshes can be expected at intervals of three to six years so that the pigmentation is maintained.

Is scalp micropigmentation a tattoo?

No. The VHD procedure is based on the permanent make-up technique, in which the pigment is not introduced into the deeper layers of the skin. Unlike a tattoo, the pigments are broken down by the body after some time. The pigmentation is therefore not permanent and has to be refreshed.

What accompanying symptoms should I expect after scalp micropigmentation?

Slight redness may appear after the pigmentation, which usually subsides after a few days. Talk to us about the treatment method that is right for you and let us advise you on the possibilities and limits of SMP.
