We plan and perform the correction of a nose that has had previous surgery at the Deutsches Nasenzentrum® of Klinik am Seestern in Düsseldorf. The specialist clinic for plastic and aesthetic surgery has its own operating theatres and patient rooms: there you are examined and advised, spend the nights after the procedure in the building and come back for your check-up appointments.

The clinic is on the left bank of the Rhine in Lörick, in the Am Seestern office district near the B7. The U77 runs directly from the main station to the Am Seestern stop, and you can park free of charge on site. From Düsseldorf, Meerbusch, Neuss and the surrounding area, the way to aftercare is short.

Common reasons for revision nose surgery

Breathing difficulties that arose or persisted after an earlier procedure

Symptoms such as pain or a feeling of pressure, as well as asymmetries of the nose after previous surgery

Wish for a nose shape that better matches your own ideas

What is meant by secondary nose surgery or revision surgery on noses?

Secondary nose surgery, also called revision rhinoplasty or corrective surgery, is a surgical procedure intended to improve or correct the result of an earlier nose operation. Patients opt for it when the first operation did not lead to the desired aesthetic or functional result, for example in the case of an unsatisfactory shape, asymmetries, breathing problems or scar tissue that affects the structure of the nose. Because the anatomical structures have already been altered, such a procedure is often more demanding than a first operation.

What treatment option is there for noses that have had previous surgery?

Treatment depends on individual symptoms and wishes. The most common corrections include:

Which corrections are needed depends on your symptoms and wishes; they are often combined in one procedure. The drawings show schematically what changes.

Irregularities or asymmetries after an earlier operation can be evened out surgically.

02Improving nasal function

If the first operation led to breathing difficulties, a further procedure can improve nasal breathing by straightening the nasal passages or widening narrowed areas.

03Correcting scar tissue

Scar tissue can affect the structure of the nose. In a revision operation it can be removed and the shape of the nose improved.

What does corrective surgery involve for a nose that has had previous surgery?

Treatment begins with a detailed consultation and examination. The surgeon assesses the result of the first operation and discusses with you the symptoms and the goals of the correction. This also involves developing realistic expectations and clarifying which improvements are possible.

The procedure is usually performed under general anaesthesia. Depending on complexity, the surgeon operates with an open or closed technique. The operation typically takes several hours. Scar tissue is removed or corrected, asymmetries are evened out and nasal function is improved. In some cases, cartilage is taken from the ear, the rib or other parts of the body to rebuild the structure of the nose.

After the operation the nose is stabilised with a splint. Aftercare includes regular check-up appointments to monitor the course of healing.

This is how your revision surgery proceeds at Klinik am Seestern:

  1. Step 1

    Beforehand

Consultation in Düsseldorf. We assess the result of the first operation, discuss your symptoms and the goals of the correction, and clarify which improvements are possible. You can book the appointment online.

  2. Step 2

    Day of surgery

The procedure. The operation is usually performed under general anaesthesia, open or closed, and typically takes several hours. In some cases cartilage is taken from the ear, rib or other parts of the body; a splint then stabilises the nose.

  3. Step 3

    The first few days

In the clinic. You stay as an inpatient for two to three nights.

  4. Step 4

    Weeks 1 to 2

Plaster splint. You wear the plaster splint and avoid nicotine, sunbathing and sport; you wash your hair with your head bent forward.

  5. Step 5

    After 2 to 3 weeks

Back to everyday life. The stitches are removed after about 14 days; you are back out among people after two to three weeks.

  6. Step 6

    Up to week 6

No glasses. For the first six weeks you refrain from wearing glasses and attend your check-up appointments.

Aims of revision nose surgery

  • Improved nasal breathing by correcting narrowings or structural changes after the first procedure

  • Correction of scar tissue and rebuilding of the nasal structure

  • Stabilisation of the nose, for example with cartilage grafts

  • Relief of symptoms such as pain, a feeling of pressure or a blocked nose after previous surgery

What does the result of corrective surgery depend on?

The result cannot be guaranteed. It depends on the starting situation after the previous operation, the technique chosen, individual healing and aftercare. The aim is to reduce functional problems such as breathing difficulties and to even out irregularities. Because of the complexity of the procedure, the result only becomes apparent after several months, once the swelling has subsided and the nasal structures have stabilised.

What restrictions come with secondary nose surgery?

After a secondary nose operation, similar restrictions can occur as after a first nose operation. Swelling and bruising are normal in the first few days and can temporarily affect nasal breathing. In the first weeks the nose is sensitive and must be protected from knocks and pressure. Avoid physical exertion and keep your head raised. It can take a few weeks until most of the swelling subsides, and up to a year until the final result is visible.

What side effects and risks are there with corrective nose surgery?

As with any surgical procedure, secondary nose surgery involves risks and side effects. The most common risks include infections, bleeding and scarring. Because this is a corrective operation, the risk of complications is somewhat higher than with a first nose operation. Undesirable aesthetic results may occur that require a further correction. In rare cases, nasal function may worsen. Following the instructions after the operation helps to reduce these risks.

What does revision nose surgery cost in Düsseldorf?

The costs depend on the extent of the correction and on whether cartilage is taken and nasal function is treated as well. You can conveniently pay in instalments via our financing partner medipay. More on this on the Rhinoplasty page. After your consultation you will receive a no-obligation treatment offer. More on financing under Financing your treatment.

What should I look out for when choosing a doctor for corrective surgery?

Make sure that the surgeon has experience in nose surgery and especially in revision rhinoplasty, and find out about the surgeon’s specialist qualification. In the consultation, ask about experience with the planned procedure. Open communication is important so that your wishes and expectations are discussed. The surgeon should explain the course of the operation, the possible risks and the aftercare to you in an understandable way.

The Deutsches Nasenzentrum® at the Klinik am Seestern is headed by Dr. med. Michael Bromba. Arrange your appointment for a no-obligation, personal consultation.

Frequently asked questions

When does German statutory health insurance pay for a nose correction?

If the operation is necessary because of a functional disorder of the nose, private health insurance or Beihilfe (German civil service allowance) may cover part of the costs. This does not apply to the aesthetic part of the nose correction. Please discuss this with your private health insurance or Beihilfe. For people with statutory insurance, reimbursement by the German statutory health insurance fund may be possible if there is a medical indication. You will receive further information in your personal consultation.

How painful is nose surgery and how long is the nose swollen?

Any pain that occurs can be treated with accompanying medication. Swelling and bruising under the eyes are possible and usually subside largely by the time the cast is removed.

How long is the stay in the clinic for a nose correction?

That depends on the extent of the procedure. For a secondary nose operation, an inpatient stay of two to three nights is usually planned. We will discuss the exact duration with you in the consultation.

How should I behave straight after a nose correction, how long do I have to wear a cast and when can I return to sport?

In the first one to two weeks, wear the plaster splint applied straight after the correction, with an adhesive or acrylic dressing. Avoid nicotine, sunbathing and sport during this time. Wash your hair with your head bent forward. In the first six weeks after the nose correction you should also refrain from wearing glasses.

How long will I be signed off sick after nose surgery?

That depends on the type and extent of the procedure. In most cases you are unable to work for 14 days, in exceptional cases and after extensive procedures for longer. Your treating doctor will discuss with you what time off to expect in your case.
