Consultation room of the clinic
Consultation room

We plan and perform the enlargement of your short nose at the Deutsches Nasenzentrum® of Klinik am Seestern in Düsseldorf. At the specialist clinic for plastic and aesthetic surgery, with its own operating theatres and patient rooms, you stay overnight for observation after the procedure; the check-up appointments afterwards also take place in the same building.

The clinic is located on the left bank of the Rhine in Lörick, in the Am Seestern office district near the B7. The U77 runs directly from the main station to the Am Seestern stop, and parking on site is free of charge. This way you reach aftercare from Düsseldorf, Meerbusch, Neuss and the surrounding area without detours.

Reasons for a nose enlargement for a short nose

  • Short nasal profile that does not match the proportions of the face
  • Functional complaints such as breathing difficulties that are related to the shape of the nose
  • Wish for a more natural profile that matches personal ideas

What is meant by a nose enlargement for a short nose?

A nose enlargement for a short nose is a surgical procedure in which a shortened nose is lengthened and its proportions are adapted to the face. A short nose is noticeably shorter than usual. It can make the face look unbalanced and in some cases can also be associated with functional problems such as breathing difficulties. Nose enlargement aims to lengthen the nose, change the nasal profile and, where necessary, improve the function of the nose.

What treatment options are there for enlarging a short nose?

There are several surgical techniques for enlarging a short nose, which are planned individually. The most common methods include:

01Cartilage grafting

Cartilage from the ear, the rib or the nasal septum is taken and inserted into the nose in order to lengthen it and strengthen the structure.

02Implants

In some cases, synthetic implants may be necessary to lengthen the nose and change the profile. The implants are shaped so that a natural appearance is aimed for.

How does the treatment for a nose enlargement for a short nose work?

It begins with a detailed consultation and planning. The surgeon examines the nasal structure and analyses the facial features in order to determine the suitable options. Your wishes and expectations are taken into account.

The operation is usually performed under general anaesthesia. Depending on its extent, it usually takes between two and four hours. The surgeon makes incisions through which the cartilage or implant is positioned at the planned site and the nose is lengthened. In some cases, tissue is additionally taken from other parts of the body.

After the operation, the nose is stabilised with a splint to support healing and secure the new shape. Patients usually stay in the clinic overnight for observation and are discharged the next day. Aftercare includes regular check-up appointments to monitor the course of healing.

This is how your nose enlargement proceeds at Klinik am Seestern:

  1. Step 1

    Beforehand

Consultation in Düsseldorf. We examine the nasal structure, analyse your facial features and determine the suitable options with you. You can book the appointment online.

  2. Step 2

    Day of surgery

The procedure. The operation is usually performed under general anaesthesia and, depending on its extent, usually takes two to four hours. Through small incisions, cartilage or an implant is positioned and the nose is lengthened; a splint then stabilises the new shape.

  3. Step 3

    First night

In the clinic. You usually stay overnight for observation and are discharged the next day.

  4. Step 4

    Weeks 1 to 2

Plaster splint. You wear the plaster splint and avoid nicotine, sunbathing and sport; you wash your hair with your head bent forward.

  5. Step 5

    After about 14 days

Back to everyday life. The stitches are removed, and you are back out among people after one to two weeks. In most cases you are unfit for work for about 14 days.

  6. Step 6

    Up to week 6

No glasses. For the first six weeks after the operation you do not wear glasses, and you attend the check-up appointments.

Possible functional aims of a nose enlargement for a short nose

  • Improving nasal breathing, if the short nose is associated with breathing difficulties

  • Stability of the nasal structure through cartilage grafts or implants

  • More balanced nasal proportions in functional and aesthetic terms

  • Relieving complaints such as a feeling of pressure or narrowed nostrils, where they are due to the shape of the nose

What does the result of a nose enlargement for a short nose depend on?

The result depends on the starting situation, the available skin and tissue, the material used, the planning, the surgical technique and the course of healing. The aim is a nose whose length matches the proportions of the face better and, where necessary, better nasal breathing. The final result shows after a few months, when the swelling has subsided and the nasal structures have stabilised.

What restrictions come with a nose enlargement for a short nose?

After a nose enlargement, temporary restrictions occur that are part of the healing process. Swelling and bruising in the area of the nose and around the eyes are normal and usually subside within the first two weeks. In the first few days, nasal breathing can be impaired by swelling, and there can be pain or a feeling of pressure. The nose is sensitive in the first weeks; protect it from knocks or pressure. Avoid physical exertion in the first weeks. Several months can pass until full healing and the final result.

What side effects and risks are there with a nose enlargement for a short nose?

As with any surgical procedure, there are risks and side effects with a nose enlargement too. The most common include infections, bleeding and scarring. In rare cases, undesired aesthetic results can occur that require a secondary correction. Implants or grafted cartilage may not heal in sufficiently, which can make further treatment necessary. Temporary swelling, bruising and restricted nasal breathing are normal and usually subside within a few weeks. In rare cases, long-term changes in skin sensitivity or problems with nasal function can occur. Careful aftercare and following the medical instructions help to reduce these risks.

What does a nose enlargement for a short nose cost in Düsseldorf?

The costs depend on the technique and extent of the procedure, for example on whether cartilage is taken, an implant is inserted or both are combined. After your consultation at Klinik am Seestern you will receive a no-obligation treatment quote. Financing is possible through our financing partner; more on this under Financing your treatment.

What should I look for when choosing a doctor for a nose enlargement?

Make sure that the surgeon has experience in nasal surgery, in particular in correcting short or saddle noses. Find out about the doctor’s qualifications, for example the specialist title and memberships of specialist societies. In the consultation, ask about experience with the planned procedure. Open communication is important so that your wishes and expectations are taken into account. The course of the operation, the possible risks and the necessary aftercare should be explained to you clearly.

The Deutsches Nasenzentrum® at the Klinik am Seestern is headed by Dr. med. Michael Bromba. Feel free to arrange an appointment for a no-obligation consultation.

Frequently asked questions

When does German statutory health insurance pay for a nose correction?

If the operation is necessary because of a functional disorder of the nose, private health insurance or Beihilfe (German civil service allowance) may cover part of the costs. This does not apply to the aesthetic part of the nose correction. Please clarify this beforehand with your private health insurance or Beihilfe. For people with statutory insurance, reimbursement by the German statutory health insurance fund is possible if there is a medical indication. You will receive further information in the personal consultation.

How painful is nose surgery and how long is the nose swollen?

Pain after the operation can usually be treated well with medication. Swelling and bruising under the eyes are possible; they have usually subsided by the time the cast is removed.

How long is the stay in the clinic for a nose correction?

As a rule, you can leave the clinic one day after the correction. In a few exceptional cases you stay for a second night for observation. Smaller procedures can be done on an outpatient basis.

How should I behave straight after a nose correction, how long do I have to wear a cast and when can I return to sport?

In the first one to two weeks you wear a plaster splint applied straight after the correction, with an adhesive or acrylic dressing. Avoid nicotine, sunbathing and sport during this time. Wash your hair with your head bent forward. In the first six weeks after the nose correction you should also not wear glasses.

How long will I be signed off sick after nose surgery?

That depends on which type of nose correction is necessary in your case. It makes a difference whether only the tip of the nose is corrected, the nose is straightened or a comprehensive nose correction is carried out. In most cases you are unfit for work for about 14 days, in exceptional cases somewhat longer. In the consultation you will find out how much time off work you should expect in your case.
