Nasal reconstruction in Düsseldorf: diagnostics, operations and aftercare in one place

We plan and perform a total nasal reconstruction at the Deutsches Nasenzentrum® of Klinik am Seestern in Düsseldorf. The specialist clinic for plastic and aesthetic surgery has its own operating theatres and patient rooms: diagnostics, the individual surgical steps, the nights afterwards and the intensive aftercare all take place under one roof.

The clinic is on the left bank of the Rhine in Lörick, in the Am Seestern office area near the B7. The U77 runs directly from the main station to the Am Seestern stop, and you can park free of charge on site. This keeps the journey to the many check-up appointments from Düsseldorf, Meerbusch, Neuss and the surrounding area short.

Common reasons for a total nasal reconstruction

Loss of the nose or severe damage to it due to a tumour disease, an accident or an injury

Impaired nasal breathing as a result of the damage

Physical and emotional strain caused by the changed appearance

What is a total nasal reconstruction?

A total nasal reconstruction is a complex surgical procedure in which the entire nasal structure is rebuilt. It is an option when the nose has been severely damaged or completely lost through accidents, cancer, congenital malformations or severe infections. The aim of the reconstruction is to restore, as far as possible, both the outer shape of the nose and its function, above all nasal breathing.

What restrictions come with a severely damaged nose?

A severely damaged or missing nose changes not only the outer appearance but also leads to functional problems. Breathing difficulties are common because the nasal passages are narrowed or blocked. The sense of smell can be lost or severely impaired. Many people affected also experience considerable psychological strain, which can also affect contact with other people.

Aims of a total nasal reconstruction

  • Improving nasal breathing by rebuilding the nasal structure

  • Rebuilding the outer shape of the nose to suit the face

  • A less conspicuous appearance in everyday life

  • Reconstruction after injuries or in the case of congenital malformations

What treatment options are there?

A total nasal reconstruction is usually carried out in several surgical steps. Tissue, skin and cartilage from your own body or special implants are used to rebuild the nasal structure. Skin grafts, rib cartilage or special prostheses are often necessary to restore the shape and function of the nose. In some cases, plastic and reconstructive procedures are combined.

How does the treatment for a total nasal reconstruction work?

The treatment begins with detailed diagnostics and planning. The surgical procedure is performed under general anaesthesia and usually in several steps. First, the necessary tissue is removed and transferred to the nasal region. The new nasal structure is then shaped and refined in further operations. Healing can take several months and requires intensive aftercare. Regular check-ups serve to monitor the course of healing and to detect complications early.

This is how a total nasal reconstruction proceeds at Klinik am Seestern, in several steps:

  1. Step 1

    Beforehand

Diagnostics in Düsseldorf. We examine the nose thoroughly and plan the reconstruction with you step by step. You can book the appointment online.

  2. Step 2

    First operation

Transferring tissue. Under general anaesthesia, the necessary tissue is removed and transferred to the nasal region. After each procedure you stay two to three nights as an inpatient.

  3. Step 3

    Further operations

Shaping and refining. The new nasal structure is then shaped and refined in further operations.

  4. Step 4

    After each procedure

Plaster splint. For the first one to two weeks you wear the plaster splint and do without nicotine, sunbathing and sport; you are back out among people after two to three weeks.

  5. Step 5

    Over the months

Healing and aftercare. Healing can take several months and requires intensive aftercare with regular check-ups.

What does the result depend on?

The result cannot be guaranteed. It depends heavily on the individual starting situation, the technique used and the aftercare. In some cases, additional corrections are necessary.

What restrictions and risks are there with a total nasal reconstruction?

As with any major surgical procedure, a total nasal reconstruction also carries risks and possible complications. These include infections, bleeding, scarring and, in rare cases, rejection of the transplanted tissue. Swelling, bruising and restricted nasal breathing are normal after the procedure and usually subside within a few weeks. In the long term, asymmetries can occur that make a further operation necessary. Close cooperation with the surgeon treating you during aftercare is therefore important.

What does a nasal reconstruction cost in Düsseldorf?

A total nasal reconstruction is planned individually for each patient, usually in several surgical steps; the costs depend on the extent, the material and the number of procedures. After the diagnostics at Klinik am Seestern you will receive a no-obligation treatment quote. Financing is possible through our financing partner; more on this under Financing your treatment.

What should I look out for when choosing a surgeon?

Make sure that the surgeon has experience in plastic and reconstructive facial surgery, in particular in nasal reconstruction. Ask in the consultation about experience with the planned procedure. The surgeon should communicate openly, give you a realistic assessment and discuss all your questions and concerns with you in detail.

The Deutsches Nasenzentrum® at the Klinik am Seestern is headed by Dr. med. Michael Bromba. Arrange your appointment for a no-obligation, personal consultation.

Frequently asked questions

When does German statutory health insurance pay for a nose correction?

If the operation is necessary because of a functional disorder of the nose, private health insurance or Beihilfe (German civil service allowance) may cover part of the costs. This does not apply to the aesthetic part of the nose correction. Please discuss this with your private health insurance or Beihilfe. For people with statutory insurance, reimbursement by the German statutory health insurance fund may be possible if there is a medical indication. You will receive further information in your personal consultation.

How painful is nose surgery and how long is the nose swollen?

Any pain that occurs can be treated with accompanying medication. Swelling and bruising under the eyes are possible and usually subside largely by the time the cast is removed.

How long is the stay in the clinic for a nose correction?

That depends on the extent of the procedure. For a nasal reconstruction, a stay of two to three nights as an inpatient is usually planned. We will discuss the exact duration with you in the consultation.

How should I behave straight after a nose correction, how long do I have to wear a cast and when can I return to sport?

In the first one to two weeks, wear the plaster splint applied straight after the correction, with an adhesive or acrylic dressing. Avoid nicotine, sunbathing and sport during this time. Wash your hair with your head bent forward. In the first six weeks after the nose correction you should also refrain from wearing glasses.

How long will I be signed off sick after nose surgery?

That depends on the type and extent of the procedure. In most cases you are unable to work for 14 days, in exceptional cases and after extensive procedures for longer. Your treating doctor will discuss with you what time off to expect in your case.
