Common wishes when adjusting an African nose shape

  • Wish for a narrower nasal base and a more defined nose tip

  • Wish for a higher nasal bridge

  • Wish for a nose shape that matches your own aesthetic ideas, or for freer nasal breathing

What is meant by adjusting African nose shapes?

The surgical adjustment of African nose shapes is a form of ethnic rhinoplasty. The aim is to change the nose shape according to the wishes of the patient without distorting the ethnic features and the harmony of the face.

African nose shapes are very diverse. Common features are a broader nasal base, a flatter nasal bridge and a less defined nose tip. Some patients wish to change individual features of this kind, for example to adjust the proportions to the rest of the face according to their own ideas, or want functional problems treated. The procedure can have aesthetic and medical reasons.

What reasons lead to the wish for an adjustment?

The reasons are individual. Commonly mentioned are:

  1. Aesthetic reasons: Some patients find the width of the nose or a flat nasal bridge unsuitable in relation to the rest of their facial features and wish for a change in proportions.

  2. Functional reasons: The shape of the nose can cause breathing difficulties. Correcting the structure of the nose can improve nasal breathing.

  3. Personal well-being: People who find their nose a burden often wish for a change in order to feel more comfortable with their own appearance.

The decision for a nose correction should be well considered and based on realistic expectations. In the consultation it is discussed which change you wish for and what of it is possible.

Aims of adjusting an African nose shape

  • Changing the proportions of the nose according to your wishes and to suit the rest of the face

  • Improving nasal breathing by correcting narrowed nasal passages

  • A natural-looking appearance through an individually planned correction

  • Preserving ethnic features through planning that takes your facial features into account

What treatment options are there for an African nose shape?

The choice of method depends on your wishes and the anatomical conditions. The most common procedures include:

The surgeon analyses the structure of the nose and recommends the method that suits the anatomical conditions and your wishes.

01Narrowing of the nasal base

In the so-called alar base reduction, tissue is removed at the base of the nose in order to reduce the width of the nose.

02Raising of the nasal bridge

With implant material or the body’s own tissue, the nasal bridge can be raised and emphasised more strongly.

03Definition of the nose tip

With a nose tip plasty (tip plasty), the structure of the nose tip is supported and reshaped in order to make it narrower and more defined.

How does the adjustment of an African nose shape work?

  1. Step 1

    Beforehand

First consultation and planning. In the consultation, your wishes and expectations are discussed. The surgeon examines the structure of the nose, clarifies any functional problems and draws up an individual treatment plan.

  2. Step 2

    Before surgery

Preparing for the procedure. Before the operation you receive instructions on preparation, for example on stopping certain medicines that increase the risk of bleeding and on avoiding nicotine and alcohol.

  3. Step 3

    Day of surgery

The surgical procedure. The operation is usually performed under general anaesthesia and, depending on its extent, takes approx. one to three hours. The incisions are placed as inconspicuously as possible.

  4. Step 4

    The weeks that follow

Aftercare. After the operation you should take it easy for a few days. Swelling and bruising are normal and usually subside within two weeks. In the first weeks, regular follow-up appointments are necessary to monitor the healing process.

  5. Step 5

    After several months

Follow-up checks. The final result only shows after several months, when the swelling has completely subsided.

What does the result depend on?

The result of a nose correction cannot be guaranteed. It depends, among other things, on the following factors:

  1. Anatomical starting situation and healing: The individual anatomical conditions and healing influence the result.

  2. Realistic expectations: In the consultation it is discussed which changes are possible and where the limits lie.

  3. Individual planning: The procedure is tailored to your wishes and your ethnic features.

  4. Aftercare: Follow the instructions after the operation and attend the follow-up appointments.

What limitations and risks are there?

As with any operation, adjusting African nose shapes also involves risks and limitations:

  1. Swelling and bruising: They usually subside within two weeks; in some cases it takes longer for the swelling to go down completely.

  2. Scarring: Even with careful placement of the incisions, conspicuous scars can occur in rare cases. This depends on individual healing and the position of the incisions.

  3. Infections: There is a low risk of infection. Hygiene and following the instructions after the operation reduce this risk.

  4. Dissatisfaction with the result: The result may differ from your expectations, for example due to individual differences in healing.

  5. Breathing difficulties: In rare cases, breathing difficulties can occur after a nose correction, especially if the structure of the nose has been changed substantially. A further correction may then become necessary.

Your surgeon will inform you about all possible complications before the procedure.

What does adjusting African nose shapes in Düsseldorf cost?

Every procedure is planned individually; the costs depend on which techniques are combined, for example whether implant material or the body’s own tissue is used and whether a functional correction is included. After your consultation at Klinik am Seestern, you will receive a no-obligation treatment offer. Financing is possible through our financing partner; more about this under Financing your treatment.

What should I look out for when choosing a surgeon?

  1. Experience: The surgeon should have experience in ethnic rhinoplasty. In the consultation, ask about experience with the planned procedure.

  2. Qualification: Find out about the surgeon’s specialist qualification.

  3. Trust and communication: The surgeon should take time for your questions, convey realistic expectations and inform you comprehensively about the procedure and aftercare.

  4. Clinic and equipment: Look for modern equipment and hygienic standards in the clinic.

Deutsches Nasenzentrum® at Klinik am Seestern is headed by Dr. med. Michael Bromba. Arrange your appointment for a no-obligation, personal consultation in Düsseldorf.

Frequently asked questions

When does German statutory health insurance pay for a nose correction?

If the operation is necessary because of a functional disorder of the nose, private health insurance or Beihilfe (German civil service allowance) may cover part of the costs. This does not apply to the aesthetic part of the nose correction. Please discuss this with your private health insurance or Beihilfe. For people with statutory insurance, reimbursement by the German statutory health insurance fund may be possible if there is a medical indication. You will receive further information in your personal consultation.

How painful is nose surgery and how long is the nose swollen?

Any pain that occurs can be treated with accompanying medication. Swelling and bruising under the eyes are possible and usually subside largely by the time the cast is removed.

How long is the stay in the clinic for a nose correction?

That depends on the extent of the procedure. As a rule, you can leave the clinic one day after the correction; in individual cases you stay for a second night for observation. Smaller measures can be carried out as an outpatient.

How should I behave straight after a nose correction, how long do I have to wear a cast and when can I return to sport?

In the first one to two weeks, wear the plaster splint applied straight after the correction, with an adhesive or acrylic dressing. Avoid nicotine, sunbathing and sport during this time. Wash your hair with your head bent forward. In the first six weeks after the nose correction you should also refrain from wearing glasses.

How long will I be signed off sick after nose surgery?

That depends on the type of procedure, for example on whether only the nose tip is corrected, the nose is straightened or a comprehensive nose correction is carried out. In most cases you are unable to work for 14 days, in exceptional cases somewhat longer. Your treating doctor will discuss with you what time off work to expect in your case.
