Consultation room of the clinic
Consultation room

Your chin correction takes place at Klinik am Seestern in Düsseldorf, from the first consultation to the check-up appointments afterwards. The specialist clinic for plastic and aesthetic surgery has its own operating theatres: you are advised and operated on in the same place where you also return for aftercare.

The clinic is on the left bank of the Rhine in Lörick, in the Am Seestern business district near the B7. The U77 runs directly from the main station to the Am Seestern stop, and there is free parking on the grounds. This also makes appointments after the procedure easy to reach from all over Düsseldorf, from Meerbusch, Neuss and the surrounding area.

Chin and facial proportions

For the overall impression of a face, the relationship between chin and nose plays a particularly important role. Our brain does not look at the individual parts of the face separately but as a whole. Often the individual parts are inconspicuous in themselves; it is only in combination that the face appears unbalanced, and the chin also influences the effect of the mouth, nose and eyes. In such cases, a chin correction can be one way of adjusting the proportions of the face.

Who is a chin correction an option for?

A chin correction is an option for women and men alike. It can also be part of a treatment concept for gender reassignment. By a chin correction we mean both the correction of a large, protruding chin, possibly with a pronounced double chin, and that of a chin perceived as too small. The latter is also known as a “receding chin”. Our doctors advise you on the options for your individual findings.

Aims of a chin correction

  • More balanced proportions and an altered side profile, above all in the relationship between nose and chin
  • Correction of asymmetries by reduction or build-up of the chin

Approach for a protruding chin that is too large

With a protruding chin, the foremost point of the lower jaw is too strongly developed and usually projects relatively far out of the face. Because this point is bony, such a chin correction can only be carried out by surgically altering the jawbone. With the help of special instruments, the bone is brought into the planned shape, length and prominence. The procedure is usually outpatient, so you can leave the clinic again on the same day. Access is as a rule through the oral cavity, and the incision is then inside the mouth. If there is also a double chin that is perceived as bothersome, a small liposuction can be carried out as part of the procedure to remove excess fatty tissue.

Treatment of a receding chin that is too small

For a chin that looks too small, a so-called receding chin, a different approach is chosen. Today, two techniques are mainly used to contour the chin. The first is a bone shift (“chin sliding”). Here the chin bone is cut through and the lower part of the bone is moved forward. The new position is fixed with special screws or wire.

In the second technique, with which a receding chin can be brought forward, a chin implant is inserted. Such an implant can be obtained from the body’s own tissue such as bone or cartilage; the pelvic bone is often used for this. Alternatively, a silicone implant can be used, which is adapted in size and shape to the chin area. In the correction of a chin that is too small, too, the operation is performed through the oral cavity in most cases, so that the incision lies inside the mouth.

Three approaches compared

How the chin is changed

Dotted: the incision inside the mouth, through which the operation is performed in most cases. Dashed: the new contour of the chin.

If the foremost point of the lower jaw is too strongly developed, the bone is brought into the planned shape, length and prominence with special instruments. With a bothersome double chin, a small liposuction can be added.

Your schedule at the Klinik am Seestern

This is how a chin correction goes at Klinik am Seestern, from consultation to healing:

  1. Step 1

    Beforehand

Consultation. Our doctors advise you on the options for your individual findings and on the risks. You can book your appointment online.

  2. Step 2

    Day of surgery

The procedure. The chin correction takes 30 to 60 minutes, under local anaesthesia or general anaesthesia, mostly through the oral cavity. You usually leave the clinic again on the day of the procedure.

  3. Step 3

    The first few days

Oral hygiene. Swelling, bruising and a feeling of tightness are possible. If the operation was performed through the oral cavity, careful oral hygiene prevents infections.

  4. Step 4

    After 2 weeks

Back among people. After 2 weeks you are usually back out among people again. You refrain from nicotine for at least two weeks.

  5. Step 5

    Until month 3

Rest. For three months you avoid sun, sunbeds, physical strain and sport.

Is a chin correction associated with risks?

Like any surgical procedure, a chin correction involves risks. The most common are intolerances to administered medication or wound-healing problems, e.g. due to inadequate oral hygiene after the procedure. The respective type of anaesthesia also brings risks, which can differ depending on physical conditions. We therefore recommend a personal, no-obligation consultation first, in which the key aspects of a chin correction, the treatment options and the risks are discussed.

The costs of a chin correction depend on your findings and the method. After your consultation at Klinik am Seestern you will receive a no-obligation treatment quote. Financing is possible through our financing partner; you can find out more under Financing your treatment.
