Thread lift: tightening without a skin incision

The threads, placed in different directions, are intended to tighten and lift the tissue. Like other minimally invasive treatments in anti-ageing medicine, the thread lift does without skin incisions; the threads are introduced through small punctures. They are made of polylactic acid, a substance that the body breaks down completely over several months.

Thread lift as an alternative to a surgical facelift

A thread lift is mainly an option if the skin of the face still has a certain firmness and has not sagged too much. It can be combined with other anti-ageing treatments, for example a wrinkle treatment with a muscle relaxant or injections of hyaluronic acid fillers.

Almost all areas of the face that sag with increasing age are possible treatment regions: eyebrows, cheeks, the jaw and neck area, the nasolabial region between nose and cheek, and the forehead.

Fillers, threads or surgery?

Which treatment is suitable depends on whether volume is mainly lacking or how much the skin has already sagged.

01Hyaluronic acidDermal fillers

Hyaluronic acid is placed in the middle to deep layers of the skin. It replenishes volume loss, for example in the cheeks or chin, and softens deeper wrinkles. A filler injection can be combined with a thread lift.

Threads made of polylactic acid are placed in the fatty tissue of the subcutis through small punctures. Small hooks anchor them in the tissue and lift it. A thread lift is mainly an option if the skin still has a certain firmness.

03FaceliftSurgery

Sagging areas of skin and tissue in the face are tightened surgically, depending on the starting situation from individual areas of the face up to the whole face. If the connective tissue has already sagged considerably, a thread lift is usually no longer suitable.

What is the procedure for a thread lift at Klinik am Seestern?

  1. Step 1

    Beforehand

Consultation in Düsseldorf. In the consultation we check whether your skin still has enough firmness for a thread lift, and determine the treatment regions and the suitable threads. You can book your appointment online.

  2. Step 2

    At the start

Local anaesthesia. First, the area of the face to be treated is locally anaesthetised.

  3. Step 3

    30 to 60 minutes

The threads. Then a thread made of polylactic acid is inserted into the fatty tissue of the subcutis with a fine needle. The thread carries small hooks, with which it anchors itself in the tissue and exerts a pulling effect on the surrounding tissue. Your treating doctor can bring the thread, with the tissue anchored to it, into the desired position.

  4. Step 4

    Straight afterwards

The tightening. The tightening is visible immediately after the treatment. You can leave the clinic on the same day; an overnight stay is not necessary.

  5. Step 5

    The first few days

Subsiding. Slight swelling and small bruises may occur. With threads with small barbs, the treatment remains noticeable for a few more days. As a rule, you resume your usual daily routine after a few days.

  6. Step 6

    Over the months

New connective tissue. In addition, the punctures stimulate the subcutaneous tissue to form collagen, which is intended to improve the skin’s elasticity and moisture balance. As the threads are broken down by the body, new connective tissue forms around them.

Which thread is suitable for which thread lift?

Most threads available today are made of polylactic acid and dissolve over time. What matters is that your treating doctor selects the suitable threads: they are intended to stimulate the build-up of collagen and to maintain the tightening effect for as long as possible. Three fundamentally different types of thread are available: smooth threads, threads with barbs and spiral-shaped threads. They affect the treatment goals differently, that is, local skin rejuvenation, volume build-up and the tightening of larger sagging areas. The experience of the treating doctor plays an important role in this selection.

Does a thread lift involve risks?

A thread lift also has risks and side effects. These include intolerance of the material used or of medication, as well as wound healing disorders. Therefore, seek comprehensive personal advice and a medical briefing before a thread lift. Our doctors at Klinik am Seestern are available to you for this.
