FUE hair transplant in Düsseldorf: consultation, procedure and aftercare in one place

Consultation room of the clinic
Consultation room

Your FUE hair transplant takes place at Klinik am Seestern in Düsseldorf, from the first consultation to the follow-up appointment after about 12 months. In the specialist clinic for plastic and aesthetic surgery, FUE hair transplants are carried out under sterile operating theatre conditions, and the procedure is outpatient.

The clinic is on the left bank of the Rhine in Lörick, in the Am Seestern business district near the B7. The U77 runs directly from the main station to the Am Seestern stop, and there is free parking on the grounds. This also makes appointments after the procedure easy to reach from all over Düsseldorf, from Meerbusch, Neuss and the surrounding area.

What is the FUE method?

The FUE technique is one of the two methods of hair transplantation used today. FUE stands for Follicular Unit Extraction and refers to the extraction of the follicular units in the donor area. Unlike FUT, with FUE the hair follicles are extracted individually with fine hollow instruments and usually transplanted shortly after extraction.

Methods compared

FUE or FUT?

Both methods transplant your own hair follicles from the ring of hair. How they obtain the follicles determines the scar, the quantity and the duration.

The follicular units are extracted individually with fine hollow instruments, without a skin incision, and re-inserted promptly. The micro-scars at the extraction sites are, as a rule, also covered by short hair, so FUE allows even short hairstyles largely without restriction.

A skin strip about 1 to 1.5 cm wide is taken from the back of the head and divided into individual grafts under stereo microscopes. The wound is sutured so that hair can grow through the narrow scar. Because many grafts can be obtained in one session, FUT is particularly suitable for large treatment areas.

Preparation of the individually harvested follicular units

The single extraction of the hair follicles (known as a “graft”) is repeated hundreds to thousands of times, depending on need. With FUE there is no strict separation between the extraction phase and the insertion phase; the hair follicles are re-inserted promptly. Because this process requires experience and routine, trained team members carry out the FUE. The graft take rate can be somewhat lower with FUE than with FUT; this is another reason why a careful approach is important.

The FUE technique is a hair transplant method that has been used for decades. It is used in particular for smaller areas, receding temples, shaping the hairline, and for beard transplants, eyebrow thickening and the reconstruction of chest hair.

Hair transplants at Klinik am Seestern are based on manual precision work. The experience of the surgeons and of the team of hair transplant technicians, compliance with hygiene and material standards, and the medical technology used all play a part in the result. FUE hair transplants are carried out at Klinik am Seestern under sterile operating theatre conditions.

Characteristics of a hair transplant using the FUE method

  • The aim is a natural-looking head of hair
  • Thinning areas no longer need to be concealed once the grafts have taken, and hairpiece solutions can become unnecessary
  • Extraction of the hair follicles at the back of the head without a skin incision and without a linear scar
  • The transplanted hair usually continues to grow permanently
  • Short healing time of the extraction sites

Scars with the FUE technique

Instead of a skin strip, with FUE the hair follicles are extracted individually, so that no linear scar results. The small extraction sites usually heal without problems, but leave micro-scars corresponding to the number of grafts extracted. As a rule they are also covered by short hair. FUE therefore allows even short hairstyles largely without restriction.

The FUE technique usually needs a larger, healthy and dense donor area and is more time-consuming. The costs of FUE procedures are therefore somewhat higher than those of FUT procedures with the same number of grafts. Extraction by FUE can be carried out on both long and short hair. Shaving the recipient area is not necessary in every case, but it can shorten the duration of the procedure considerably.

How does a hair transplant using the FUE method work?

The recipient area is fitted, in a precise arrangement, with small puncture channels about the size of a pore, known as slits. Unlike with FUT, the grafts can be inserted immediately after extraction. An FUE thus consists, in essence, of hundreds to thousands of individual small hair transplants. At Klinik am Seestern, every extracted hair follicle is prepared once more by hand before being inserted, in order to support a natural-looking direction of growth and the combability of the hair. The instruments are chosen to match the properties of the hair follicles and, during the treatment, are changed if necessary, depending on the position of the follicle.

The treatment process at a glance: FUE technique

  1. Step 1

    Beforehand

Your treatment concept. Before the procedure, the treatment concept, including the marked hairline, is finally discussed with your treating doctor. You are told the expected duration of treatment: FUE hair transplants at Klinik am Seestern take between 5 and 8 hours.

  2. Step 2

    Day of surgery

The extraction. The procedure takes place under local anaesthesia. It begins with the single extraction of the follicular units from the donor area, the ring of hair.

  3. Step 3

    Preparation

Prepared once more by hand. Every extracted hair follicle is prepared once more by hand, in order to support a natural-looking direction of growth and combability. Between extraction and transplantation, the follicular units are kept cooled.

  4. Step 4

    Insertion

Into the bald areas. The recipient area is prepared for the insertion of the grafts using the needle or slit technique. Our hair transplant technicians insert the follicular units into the bald areas. They pay particular attention to the natural direction of growth and the planned hairline. A solution to soothe the scalp is then applied.

  5. Step 5

    The first few days

The resting phase. After the procedure you receive the most important information and recommendations on how to behave during the first few days. Wash the transplanted hair in the first few days only as instructed by Klinik am Seestern. The hair is now in a resting phase.

  6. Step 6

    Weeks 1 to 4

Back to everyday life. Many patients can go back to work after 2 to 3 days, and you are back out among people after 1 to 2 weeks. You refrain from sport for at least 4 weeks so that the transplanted hair can heal in undisturbed.

  7. Step 7

    After about 12 months

The result. The result of the hair transplant can be assessed after about 12 months. The transplanted hair has then grown in and is a few centimetres long.

What does an FUE hair transplant cost in Düsseldorf? Costs and financing

The costs of an FUE hair transplant depend on the extent of the procedure. Because the FUE technique usually needs a larger, healthy and dense donor area and is more time-consuming, the costs are somewhat higher than for an FUT with the same number of grafts. How many grafts are possible in your case is something we discuss in the consultation at Klinik am Seestern. Afterwards we prepare a no-obligation treatment quote for you. Financing is possible through our financing partner; you will find more on this under Financing your treatment.

Frequently asked questions

How many grafts can be transplanted per session?

In an FUE hair transplant we extract up to about 2,500 grafts (just under 5,000 individual hairs), so that the donor area does not thin out too much and as many grafts as possible take. The quantity that is possible varies individually and depends, among other things, on the size of the back of the head, the hair density and the tendency to form scars. We will be happy to advise you in person at Klinik am Seestern.

Does the back of the head have to be shaved for an FUE hair transplant?

Yes, this is necessary for extraction with the FUE method. If you have your hair cut very short beforehand (a few millimetres at the back), the shaving is usually barely noticeable after about 2 weeks.

Do scars form in the donor area?

With an FUE hair transplant no linear scar results. At each extraction site of a follicle (graft), however, a small wound forms, which leaves a pinpoint micro-scar. These micro-scars are usually covered by the surrounding hair.

How long does the healing process take with an FUE in the donor area?

The extraction sites usually heal within a few days. Many patients can go back to work after 2 to 3 days. You should refrain from sport for at least 4 weeks so that the transplanted hair can heal in undisturbed.

For how many treatments is the donor hair at the back of the head enough?

With the FUE method, 1 to 2 treatments are usually possible, and more after previous FUT treatments. Even at the first treatment, small areas of scarring form around neighbouring grafts, which make follow-up treatments more difficult. The number of micro-scars rises with every treatment. So that the donor area does not become visibly thin, a switch to the FUT method may make sense if further treatment is needed.

What does an FUE hair transplant cost in Düsseldorf?

The costs depend on the extent of the procedure. Because FUE is more time-consuming, the costs are somewhat higher than for an FUT with the same number of grafts. After your consultation at Klinik am Seestern you receive a no-obligation treatment quote. Financing is possible through our financing partner.
