Endoscopic stomach reduction using the POSE procedure, now new at Klinik am Seestern in Düsseldorf.

Klinik am Seestern, specialist clinic for plastic and aesthetic surgery, offers the POSE procedure for endoscopic stomach reduction. The procedure is done on an outpatient basis.

The POSE procedure is a minimally invasive method of reducing the stomach volume that is intended to support an earlier and longer-lasting feeling of fullness. In a single procedure, changes are made both in the upper part of the stomach and at the stomach outlet. The procedure is based on a special endoscope from the US manufacturer USGI Medical. As of now, this treatment is also available at Klinik am Seestern in Düsseldorf.

How does the POSE procedure work?

The POSE procedure is performed endoscopically, that is, without an abdominal incision. It is intended to help curb appetite and bring on the feeling of fullness more quickly. In this endoscopic stomach reduction, the treating doctor places a series of small anchors at specific points inside the stomach and connects them with special threads. Depending on the patient’s size, starting weight and stomach volume, 10 to 16 of these anchors are placed. This creates targeted gastric folds that reduce the stomach volume by up to a third.

The POSE patient feels the effect in two places:

  • Reducing the stomach volume in the upper part of the stomach slows food intake and brings on the feeling of fullness more quickly.
  • Narrowing the stomach outlet prolongs the feeling of fullness and delays the return of hunger.

Differences from surgical procedures

Other surgical measures for stomach reduction require incisions or access through the abdominal wall. With the POSE procedure, by contrast, access is endoscopic via the mouth. Like any medical procedure, the POSE procedure involves risks and side effects, which are explained in the consultation. How much weight is lost and kept off in the long term depends, among other things, on diet and exercise after the procedure. The treatment is an option for overweight and obese patients with a BMI of approx. 28 to 42.
