Gastric balloon with a dwell time of 12 months
The gastric balloon system, designed for 12 months, is a non-surgical treatment for weight loss. The balloon is introduced endoscopically through the mouth and throat into the stomach and filled there with blue-coloured saline solution. The system is approved for a dwell time of 12 months. The balloon also has a “safety anchor”, which is intended to prevent it from passing into the intestine if it leaks and possibly causing an intestinal obstruction there.
With the Spatz3 system, the filling volume of the already placed gastric balloon can be adjusted afterwards, upwards or downwards. In this way the balloon can be adapted to your tolerance, and nausea and vomiting can be reduced.

Your schedule at the Klinik am Seestern
First, you discuss all the details of the treatment with our doctors. The outpatient insertion of the balloon takes about 30 minutes. Afterwards you stay in the clinic for about 1 hour for observation and then go home. Instead of 6 months, the balloon can also remain in the stomach for 12 months; this gives more time for changing your diet and for exercise. The filling volume can be readjusted as soon as you have got used to the balloon. The treatment is accompanied by our nutrition coaches. After 12 months the balloon is removed again as an outpatient under sedation, by the same route by which it was inserted.

Insertion. Under twilight sedation, the balloon is inserted and filled in about 30 minutes; after about an hour of observation you go home.

The first few days
Getting used to it. Nausea and discomfort are possible and usually subside after 3 to 5 days. Your contact person stays in touch with you.

After about 2 weeks
Eating normally again. Your body has got used to the balloon, and the change in diet and exercise begins.

Over the course of the year
Losing weight with support. Your health coach meets you regularly, depending on the package; if needed, the filling volume of the balloon is adjusted.

After 12 months
Removal. The balloon is emptied and removed as an outpatient through the oesophagus under sedation. The new habits remain.

Getting used to the gastric balloon
In the first days with the gastric balloon you may feel unwell, because the stomach first has to get used to the balloon. Everyone reacts differently; you should be prepared for accompanying symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhoea or cramps. It is important to drink plenty during this time and to avoid solid and fatty foods.
During this time a personal contact person is at your side who stays in regular touch with you. Our nutrition coaches also give you advice on how to deal with the discomfort of the first days.

Medically supervised weight loss
After an adjustment period of about two weeks, your body has got used to the gastric balloon and you can eat normally again. Depending on the service package you have chosen, you meet at regular intervals with your health coach, who supports you in reducing your weight. How much weight you lose depends on your starting situation and your change of diet. In good time before the end of the dwell time you will receive an appointment for the removal. In this, the gastric balloon is emptied and removed through the oesophagus. Whether you keep the weight you have reached depends on whether you also maintain the new habits without the gastric balloon.

In a personal consultation, our doctors explain the various gastric balloon systems, their requirements and risks to you and discuss with you which treatment is an option for you.
In the first days your stomach has to get used to the gastric balloon. An upset stomach and discomfort with vomiting are therefore possible. In most cases these symptoms subside after about 3 to 5 days. After that, the gastric balloon is intended to bring about an earlier feeling of fullness and reduce cravings.
What distinguishes the gastric balloon from a diet?
The gastric balloon reduces the capacity of the stomach and can thus support you in changing your diet to a healthy level. How much weight you lose depends on your starting situation and your change of diet.
Can the gastric balloon leak and empty as a result?
This is possible in rare cases. If the gastric balloon loses fluid, your urine changes colour, because a harmless dye has been added to the saline solution. In this case, please contact your treating doctor immediately. In some cases the gastric balloon then has to be removed.
Is the gastric balloon enough on its own, or should I also make use of advice?

Can the filling volume of the balloon be changed?

I had my appointment at the practice for a consultation about my lipoedema, and I really want to leave a review even though I haven't had any surgery there yet. The reason is that this was the first time I felt truly taken seriously during an examination of my lipoedema. Dr. Witt was very friendly and professional from the start, and at the same time incredibly pleasant and humane. He took an exceptional amount of time, examined me very thoroughly and answered all my questions in detail. He is incredibly respectful and explains realistically what could be done and how the whole process would work. I found it particularly positive that at no point did a hectic or unpleasant mood arise. You never had the feeling of being “brushed off” or being under time pressure. Instead, the whole atmosphere was calm, relaxed and trusting. Dr. Witt was very committed, photos were taken of the affected areas and every possible treatment was explained in an understandable way. Dr. Witt explained everything in detail, yet never came across as complicated or distant. Although he is an absolute specialist in his field, I felt at all times that I could speak openly and ask any question. It felt more as if I had been a patient there for a long time. It was also particularly important to me that I never felt pushed towards an operation. It is still not at all clear whether I will have my operation at all, and yet I was taken incredibly seriously and treated with respect. That is exactly what built so much trust in me. I would also very much like to mention the lady at reception, Marris, in a positive way. She was super polite, had a very pleasant and calm manner and immediately gave me a good feeling. Although it was almost 5 p.m. and the end of the working day was approaching, she was incredibly friendly to me and did not seem at all annoyed or stressed. It is precisely such little things that make a huge difference to me personally and reinforced my positive overall impression of the practice. The practice itself is also absolutely impressive. It is extremely modern, high-quality and stylishly furnished. You feel more as if you are entering a luxury hotel than a traditional doctor's practice. Everything seems very well thought out, calm and professional. The organisation around the appointment was also excellent. Even before the appointment, communication was always very friendly, quick and professional. Questions were answered immediately and the whole process seemed perfectly organised. I was also allowed to park in the clinic's car park, which was an enormous relief since everything in the area was completely full. Although it was already later in the afternoon, Dr. Witt even personally saw to it that enquiries were made internally about my question regarding costs. Shortly after I had left the practice, I already received all the information by email. That too simply shows how professionally and attentively they work there.
