Not every patient takes the route through German statutory health insurance. How self-paid lipoedema surgery at Klinik am Seestern in Düsseldorf works, what the costs depend on and what private insurance and Beihilfe (German civil service allowance) have to say about it.

Lipoedema surgery as a self-pay patient in Düsseldorf: consultation, procedure and aftercare in-house

Consultation room of the clinic
Consultation room

If you pay for lipoedema surgery yourself, you plan it directly with us: at Klinik am Seestern in Düsseldorf you are examined and advised, operated on in the same building and called back for aftercare. The specialist clinic for plastic and aesthetic surgery has its own operating theatres and patient rooms for this. You book your consultation online straight away as a self-pay patient.

The clinic is in the Lörick district on the left bank of the Rhine, in the Am Seestern office district near the B7. The U77 runs from Düsseldorf main station to the Am Seestern stop without a change, and from there you walk to the clinic. If you come by car, you park free of charge on the clinic grounds, whether you travel from the city itself, from Meerbusch or from Neuss.

Why patients pay for lipoedema surgery themselves

Since October 2025, German statutory health insurance can cover liposuction for lipoedema at all stages, but only under fixed conditions. The operation is then usually performed at the Weight Doctors’ Nationalklinik in Wertheim, whereas as a self-pay patient you are treated with us in Düsseldorf. Not every patient meets these conditions, and not every patient wants to take the prescribed route. The reasons differ:

  • The conditions of German statutory health insurance are not met
  • You do not want to wait out the six months of preliminary treatment
  • You are privately insured and sort out the costs yourself
  • You want to plan the date and order freely

One thing does not change as a result: whether and when an operation makes medical sense for you is decided by the examination. We look at your findings, talk about your symptoms and previous treatments and advise you honestly, even if we first recommend a different step.

What the costs of lipoedema surgery in Düsseldorf depend on

The treated regions

Lipoedema can occur on the legs, arms, hips and other parts of the body. The more areas are treated, the more involved the procedure becomes. You can read more about the individual regions under Lipoedema in the legs and Lipoedema in the arms.

The amount of tissue

On the arms, a smaller procedure often involves a few hundred millilitres; with pronounced findings on the legs, considerably more. The amount helps determine the duration and effort of the operation.

The number of sessions

If a lot of tissue has to be removed, the treatment is spread over several sessions for safety reasons. Each session is a procedure in its own right, with anaesthesia, a stay and aftercare.

We therefore do not state a flat-rate sum. After the first consultation at Klinik am Seestern in Düsseldorf you will receive a quote tailored to your findings and the planned extent. If skin tightening is added later, it is a procedure in its own right; you can read more about this under Skin tightening after lipoedema surgery.

Your path as a self-pay patient at Klinik am Seestern

  1. Step 1

    Book online

Appointment as a self-pay patient. In the booking portal you choose the self-pay route under lipoedema and pick a consultation appointment in Düsseldorf.

  2. Step 2

    First consultation

Examination and discussion. We examine and measure the legs and arms, assess the extent and stage and check whether lymphoedema is also present.

  3. Step 3

    Afterwards

Your quote. You receive a treatment quote and take your time to weigh it up at your leisure. We also answer questions after the conversation.

  4. Step 4

    Day of surgery

The procedure in-house. Depending on the extent, liposuction takes about 2 to 5 hours. Afterwards you either go home the same day or stay with us for 1 to 2 nights.

  5. Step 5

    6 to 8 weeks

Compression and aftercare. You wear compression garments and come to the clinic for check-ups. You can read what these weeks look like under After lipoedema surgery.

Planning lipoedema surgery in Düsseldorf with your own calendar

As a self-pay patient you set the date of the operation together with us. Include the weeks afterwards in your planning: after the procedure you wear compression garments for about 6 to 8 weeks, you are usually back out among people after 7 to 10 days, and it takes about 4 to 6 weeks until you have fully recovered. Choose a time, therefore, when work and family leave room for this recovery.

If the treatment is spread over several sessions, we also discuss the order, for example whether the legs or the arms are treated first, and the interval between the procedures. All appointments take place at Klinik am Seestern in Düsseldorf.

What to bring to the consultation at Klinik am Seestern

  • Findings and doctors’ letters on your lipoedema
  • Prescriptions and receipts for compression and lymphatic drainage
  • A list of your medications
  • Your questions about the process, costs and recovery

We will discuss together which of this matters for your private insurance or Beihilfe. You book the consultation online directly as a self-pay patient.

Private health insurance, supplementary insurance and Beihilfe (German civil service allowance)

Private health insurance

Whether private insurance covers lipoedema surgery depends on your tariff. Ask your questions before the treatment and have the answer given to you in writing.

Supplementary insurance

With private supplementary insurance, too, the contract decides. Check whether benefits for operations are included and which time limits apply.

Beihilfe

Beihilfe offices follow their own rules. Ask which evidence is required before you fix a date for the operation.

For all three, the following applies: you should keep findings reports, prescriptions and receipts for previous treatments carefully. You can submit the treatment quote you receive after the first consultation to your insurer for review.

Financing and tax

You do not have to bear the costs all at once: through our financing partner medipay, payment in instalments is possible, subject to sufficient creditworthiness. You can read how this works under Financing your treatment.

Costs that you bear yourself for a medically necessary treatment can be declared in your tax return as an “außergewöhnliche Belastung” (extraordinary financial burden). Whether this has an effect in your case depends on your personal situation; seek tax advice on this.

Rather via German statutory health insurance?

If you meet, or would like to meet, the conditions of German statutory health insurance, liposuction can also be covered by health insurance. The operation is then usually performed at the Weight Doctors’ Nationalklinik in Wertheim, while consultation, preparation and aftercare remain in Düsseldorf. You can read what is needed for this under Lipoedema surgery as a statutory health insurance patient in Düsseldorf. If you are still undecided, simply book the consultation without committing; at Klinik am Seestern we will discuss both routes with you.

Frequently asked questions

What does lipoedema surgery cost as a self-pay patient in Düsseldorf?

That depends on how many parts of the body are treated, how much tissue is suctioned off and whether the treatment is spread over several sessions. After the first consultation at Klinik am Seestern you receive a quote tailored to your findings.

Why do women choose lipoedema surgery as a self-pay patient?

Some do not meet the requirements of German statutory health insurance or do not want to wait out the prescribed period of preliminary treatment; others are privately insured. Regardless of this, we check during the examination whether an operation makes medical sense for you.

Does private health insurance pay for lipoedema surgery?

Your insurer decides this according to your tariff. Ask before the treatment whether and to what extent the costs are covered and which documents are required. A findings report and evidence of previous treatments help with this.

What applies to civil servants with Beihilfe?

Beihilfe offices decide according to their own rules. Clarify beforehand which evidence is needed, and keep findings, prescriptions and invoices carefully.

Can I deduct the costs of lipoedema surgery from my taxes?

Costs that you bear yourself for a medically necessary treatment can be declared in your tax return as an “außergewöhnliche Belastung” (extraordinary financial burden). Whether and to what extent this has an effect in your case depends on your situation. Seek tax advice on this.

Can I pay for the treatment in instalments?

Yes, financing in instalments is possible through our financing partner medipay and requires sufficient creditworthiness. You can read more under Financing your treatment.

As a self-pay patient, do I also have to undergo conservative therapy beforehand?

The six months of preliminary treatment are a condition of German statutory health insurance. Whether compression, lymphatic drainage and exercise make sense in your case before an operation, we will discuss with you after the examination.
